Is the problem folks have with quotes/quote-boosts that the person quoted gets a notification?

Or that the quoted post gets visually formatted as a post. Or both?

I see these as two separate features, and I'd be personally fine with just the preview without a notification, which is what some apps do, I believe.

weirdwriter,

I never want to be notified if someone quotes me. Plain and simple. I do want notifications if they reply to me. If they are so cowardly as to quote me and not reply directly to me, I never wanna hear about people quoting me or who quoted me. @stefan

@weirdwriter That makes sense!

To elaborate, I know that there's more that goes into quotes, I'm really just wondering about the distinction between being able to link to people's posts at all, which I don't really see criticized, vs getting a proper preview, without any of the other features and functionality of quotes.

@cheeaun I've seen at least parts of this thread, thank you for sharing!

Can't believe I'm even getting started with this again, because this specific point seems to be utterly irrelevant to all the men who want / or whatever you want to call them and who don't care how they're used

The problem is that women with opinions would be quote posted to cc lists of misogynist, incel males all of whom would proceed to brigade her for hours and hours with vivid, angry threats

I saw it happen repeatedly on Twitter

"Oh, well, she should just and all of them then!"

Yeah

Women with unpopular opinions should spend all their time on social media fighting a rear-guard action against woman-haters who are attacking them in packs

Or maybe never stick their necks out again, which is the desired effect

"Sit down and shut up, bitch, but fix me a sammich first!"

Yes, all this makes sense. The thing I'm specifically wondering about is if a solution to this would be not allowing to link to a post of a person at all, unless you follow them/they follow you.

Versus being able to link to their post, but getting a preview of the post as if it was a web page, vs seeing the post rendered as another post in your feed.

@FinchHaven And on top of that would be the question of people getting notified when their post is shared, without without a proper preview.

@FinchHaven I'm just not seeing a lot of criticism of being able to link to people's posts at all, regardless of how the post itself is rendered, so I'm wondering if the lack of a preview is intended to be a determent.

I'm also trying to look up some studies about why "quote tweets" lead to harassment, and I get that the main issue seems to be an account with a large number of followers linking to someone's post.

Can't see much about the impact of the quoted post being formatted as a post vs people having to click through to read it.

Just wondering if the extra step does work as a determent.

@stefan

They lead to harassment because people use them like gossip. It's not engaging the person directly but a way to talk about a person -or their comment- with their own followers and not with the person directly.

Sometimes its "Oh did you hear about this thing that so-in-so said?" But that's just as well done with typical non-quote boosts. Adding "I like this" doesn't add anything that boosting isn't already adding.

As often it's "Oh, look at what this dummy said! Isn't he dumb! Don't you agree with me that he's dumb!" The negative quote-boost is the thing that people want. It's the thing that can't easily happen with regular boosts. That missing feature is one of the main reasons why Mastodon is such a more pleasant place to spend time. It doesn't have features that reinforce and itemize negative iterations.

@1dalm Thank you for chiming in!

Do you think it would be helpful to not allow linking to other people's posts at all, or maybe only if you both follow each other?

Or do you think linking is okay as long as the post doesn't show a preview?
