GodzillaSpark,

I have a question. I clicked the link to kilioa and read the faq. When I wanted to upvote it, it asked me to login. But I’m already logged in here on kbin.social. Am I going to need to create an account on every instance of kbin? That feels way too cumbersome.

Hey! And no, you don't need to create a login to each instance to upvote/comment.

I'll copy paste my previous answer on another thread in a moment:

Edit: here it is:

Hey, that's not an article by me, just crossposting it here :) and the link takes you to a different Kbin instance (not kbin.social), but since kbin is part of the fediverse (and so is kilioa), you can actually find the same post on kbin.social and upvote it here. Heres the link to post on kbin.social: https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/11493/A-small-FAQ-to-hopefully-help-new-users-to-kbin

I know this is fediverse stuff is confusing, but you'll get the hang of it as you explore, no worries!

The reason why I posted the link to the original thread on kbin instance kilioa.org instead of the kbin.social one is due to this whole federation thing being a bit broken right now (temporary measures to help the developer of kbin deal with loads of new traffic on this site), so the updated/edited kilioa.org thread "did not yet arrive" to kbin.social.

The same post on here, kbin.social, is the "original" post from kilioa.org. Usually this whole federation-thing makes sure that when the OP updates the post on their instance, it will be updated here too. They are kind of "mirrored". But yeah sadly right now the federation is bit broken temporarily. I wanted everyone to see the updated version which was posted originally on kilioa.org.

Hope I explained it clearly enough, this whole fediverse took me awhile to understand too.

Rohbtc,

Thank you for being so welcoming. I know large influxes of new users can disrupt small communities. I appreciate how inviting and helpful everyone has been. :)

Just doing my part to help a community grow :) I'm very thankful that there are alternatives to reddit and that they have been open to us refugees!

Can you help me on how to find a list of magazines to subscribe to?

I don't know any existing ones so searching had been rather frustrating.

Hey! I honestly just use the search function on your top bar to find posts and the magazines they are posted on.

Another thing I've been doing is going to the magazines tab and just sorting by "active" to see if there is anything I like!

I was planning that after work I could post to m/kbin a thread asking people for their favourite magazines.

I'll ping you as soon as I make a a thread, or make one yourself! Do let me know please :)

Edit: just occurred to me that maybe the top bar on kbin is not intuitive, did you find the "All magazines" tab and figured how to sort them?

Also the search is not perfecr, but using keywords helps.

If you want to just browse random stuff i can always recommend m/random

dipbeneaththelasers,

@Lazycog did it work?

Lazycog,

Definitely did! Although notifications are slow to update, guess that's due to all the traffic coming to kbin right now. Thanks for the test!

Edit: added an image to show how it shows up in the notifications.

dipbeneaththelasers,

Rad. I'm liking this platform more and more!

I wonder if pings are cross-platform too. I bet there's something in the ActivityPub docs if they are. I'll do some digging later.

They are AFAIK, I've received notifications for replies to my comments that were made by people outside kbin.

dipbeneaththelasers,

That's very good to know, thank you.

I'd be curious about that too. And agreed, love this platform and really looking forward to the developer making all the changes and features he has mentioned in different threads!

Also noticed how some of the niche subreddits have migrated to fediverse. I think we'll be fine.

Quick question. To my understanding, magazines here are the equivalent of subreddits. So what exactly is a microblog?

Edit: Ohhh ok. That makes a lot more sense. Thanks for the answers!

lightsecond,

The equivalent of a tweet.

Its kind of like Twitter, and its also where posts from Mastodon show up.

To add to the good answers here already: AFAIK another platform that uses microblog format other than twitter is tumblr.

Threads and microblogs are just different type of format to make a "post". I've explained the microblog part a bit more here (mastodon).

spirinolas,

As I explore this platform I like it more and more. It has great potential and the decentralization and integration rock. If more people join this I might ditch reddit altogether even if they concede.

Hey @tchambers (do pings notify the user?) would it be possible to sticky this crosspost? I've been trying to redirect people to here for help but the amount of comments from people who are lost is quite overwhelming.

I know this article helped me a lot!

dipbeneaththelasers,

Curious about pings too. In a new comment in this thread I'll ping you. Let me know what happens.
