"If the Chinese Government want user data on US citizens' social media usage, they'll just have to buy it from our data brokers like everyone else."

" can buy our info, so why go after "

is like

"i can get mugged on the street, so i'd rather invite the mugger into my house and get into my bed with them"

My point was more a comment on the non-exsiting US regulations that allow Meta, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and their 745 "partners" to indiscriminately collect personal information and profiles on all of us.

I don't trust US companies any more than I do ByteDance, so that's not the issue. It's about political posturing pretending to do something about a privacy problem while completely ignoring companies that are much closer. A powerful punch in the air...

the us govt is a rancid corrupt cesspool

but the us govt is not the totalitarian human rights destroying nightmare that is the chinese govt

anyone who remotely cares about privacy is not happy about the govt of china with detailed access to anyone anywhere through tiktok

the problem is this "perfect is the enemy of good" argument angle: that because we don't get perfect privacy protection in the usa, we mock the govt going after radioactive slime like tiktok

no, we celebrate it
