Yuck. I didn’t notice that at first.

This has become my biggest issue so far with Kbin.

Eh, it really does need to be moved up but I figure all in due time. I'm really feeling the inability to collapse comments as I read, but I remember seeing that was already planned for the future. God knows, poor Ernest must be running around like a chicken with his head cut off

Hopefully it'll be changed but for the time being you can fix this with a few lines of code in Tampermonkey.

the_inebriati,

This is awesome, really appreciated. Is there any way to get rid of the empty space to the left and right?

If you're on Android, Jerboa is decent, if not perfect yet. I think there's a very early stages iOS one too, but I can't recall its name right now.

autumnplains,

Yeah I’m honestly sad, but more sad about Apollo than Reddit. Seeing the big subs join the protest and seeing the activity here has been a nice silver lining though. I just don’t want to see the really specific/niche groups on Reddit die. So I hope they come here 🥺

Agreed but with Relay in place of Apollo. I really grew accustomed to that app.

All the more reason to make some magazines. “If you build it they will come” and all.

I saw a thread over at Lemmy somewhere that a guy is working on some code that makes it possible for Reddit client developers to change the app to run on the Fediverse by changing a single line of code. Seemed pretty promising for both the clients and these communities.

It feels like when you leave a toxic relationship. You realize how unhappy you were and are enjoying your refound freedom but there is that pang if sadness when you remember the early days of the relationship when it was good and you were happy.

mo_lave,

A little

rootLancer,

It’s a little sad. I got really into reddit because of my gf. At the same time this is kinda exciting. Lemmy feel like early days of the internet. There is no ads, no algorithm trying to guess what I like, and I need to make the effort to find something I like

thoralf,

It turns into relief meanwhile. Actually, I want Reddit to die as fast as possible.

I deleted my Facebook-account a couple of years ago. At the beginning it felt a bit weird. But in hindsight it was one of the best decisions. My Twitter-Account got deleted in fall last year. And again: It was a good decision. I expect the decision to delete my Reddit-Account to be equally liberating.

I feel that. Reddit's bit of an addiction for me. I don't use other social media so it became my one stop shop for news, inspiration, and to connect with all the little niche intrest.

Oddly, I was frequently just doom scrolling r/all to see what was going on the the world. And when I ran out of revent stuff if just sort by new. Super unhealthy behavior.

Hopfully this transition will help me slow down a bit and get back to reality.

joshuaacasey,

As someone that's had a mastodon account since a few years before elon purchased twitter. I was excited to see the growth of the fediverse from the Elon-Twitter kerfuffle. And I'm excited to see the fediverse grow with the Reddit kerfuffle. The fediverse feels like what the Internet should be -- FOR EVERYONE. Not owned by billionaires or corporations.

(This is something that I've never forgotten from the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony) In the words of Sir Tim Berners-Lee: "This is for everyone") https://webfoundation.org/2012/07/sir-tim-berners-lee-closes-out-2012-olympic-opening-ceremony-this-is-for-everyone-one-web/

nieceandtows,

I don't follow the mastodon scene very well. How big is mastodon now? How has it changed over the past year?

joshuaacasey,

this website built by the guy that does pixelfed (fediverse version of instagram) has some statistics (mastodon appears to make up a large part of the fediverse) https://fedidb.org/software

It'll be interesting how those statistics change once Tumblr integrates the ActivityPub protocol and becomes part of the fediverse.

Plus, you also have Flipboard embracing the fediverse as well

nieceandtows,

Nice. Didn't realize there are over a million monthly users on mastodon. Lemmy seems puny with under 10k, but I'm curious to see the stats next month

I view this as a fresh start. Cut off the old and grow a new one. Just like a gecko. I spent a lot of time on reddit but I can't say I ever actually connected with another person on it, there were just too many people on even the small subs I joined. Maybe lemmy will bring back the small internet forum feel and we'll actually be able to stand out from the crowd better and actually get to know each other.

higante,
@higante@lemmy.world avatar

This is vet much the case for me atlest. I've posted/commented more in the last 2 or 3 days here than i did the the last 2-3 months on reddit.

Hey RickyRigatoni, nice to meet you :)

AbSoluTc,

Yes and no. Reddit had become toxic and a shadow of it’s former self. It was a good run for 11 years. Hopefull Lemmy can be an alternative. :)

bjwest,

I moved to Reddit when Digg destroyed itself. It wasn't too hard to make the switch, although it did take a bit of getting used to. I imagine it'll be the same this time, or maybe a bit easier, as the format of lemmy.ml is not too different in appearance from Reddit.

Accidentaladult,

Yes but I think more from a familiarity standpoint (10 year old account). I had my routine of subreddits to visit. I also liked the centralization on content.

This new federation of sites is going to take a bit of time for me to figure out. I used the reddit app and was ok with it. What actually pissed me off the most was the callousness of the admins. Fuck that.

GilloutineBreast,

More than anything else, I'm going to miss the easy access to reliable answers by appending reddit to whatever I'm searching for in Google

PitzNR,

No, actually, I used reddit just to pass time, never really engaged in the community, and without this whole debacle I wouldn't have found out about lemmy and the fediverse as a whole, which is really exciting and a new part of the internet (for me) that feels like a breath of fresh air after years of everything being so centralized around very few companies, I'm getting a vibe of the internet from 15-20 years ago, exploring the wild west of the internet.

scarrexx,

I'm getting the same retro vibe, for so long I've been missing how cool and simple things used to be, the fediverse sounds really amazing and a more futuristic way of engaging online.

However, I indeed miss the old reddit since I was an active member and also all the lost karma lol.

cleareyes,

It’s probably unhealthy to have such an attachment to fake internet points that do literally nothing.

I guess for me Reddit lasted longer and grew bigger than I expected it to, so I see this as a natural progression. It grew much further than it had any right to, I think.

PostMalort,

My only trepidation comes from the niche communities on Reddit that I loved and whether they'll transfer over to the fediverse. /R/woodworking for instance has some of the most supportive, pleasant users I've ever interacted with.

J_C___,

Hopefully it won't be long before such communities exist here too

scarrexx,

I don’t exactly have such a huge attachment but for 4 years of using reddit as a silent lurker, I only ever started posting and gaining karma last month… i got about 9k since then so yeah… having to restart is draining a bit… but like you said, it doesn’t really matter.
