Treczoks,

It would be funny if the Democrats kept the GOP speaker on the job because he is so bad, and spells trouble for his own party...

Guy who fights to make his evangelical scrapbook he calls a bible into the soverign law and belittles his coworkers in hopes of getting good-boy points for his false prophet may need to rely on the afformentioned coworkers he belittles?

there is nothing about this scenario that feels like a win for anyone

Exactly. Johnson is a fascist and a religious extremist.

Let the Republicans devour each other. Let’s not pretend Johnson’s a good guy over one vote like you all did with Liz Cheney.

PhlubbaDubba,

Well they just got the defense funding for Ukraine so probably not now that they don’t actually need him

Dagwood222,

This is all about appearances and feelings. US general elections are in November so appearances are important.

Taking away the Speakership would look great for the Dems, but would mean that the GOP would be fighting tooth and nail 24/7 until the elections.

Having Johnson in place as a GOP who will work with them means the Dems can pass laws they want and make Biden look good. You have to realize that up until the Reagan Era, the GOP had a pretty strong Liberal wing. Not following the Party line blindly wasn’t as big an issue then as it is today. Most Americans want a functional Congress.

There are plenty of GOP Congress members in states that for for Biden in 2020. They would like to be able to campaign as moderates who get things done, which appeals to independent voters.

The GOP side comes down to how the Trump loyalists/extreme Far Right decide to paly it out. They got rid of the past few Speakers and may decide that they want to do it again to show how strong they are. The problem with a big fight is that they might lose, and end up looking weaker.

HobbitFoot,

I think there is also a benefit in having Republicans forced to govern in some form until the election.

First, Republicans have to actually negotiate on bills rather than take every position as it benefits them.

Second, getting Republicans to flip now makes Democrats wholely responsible for getting House majorities to pass bills. I don’t see Democrats able to pass bills in that environment, so it is better for them to keep this problem Republican.

Dagwood222,

It’s the kind of situation where what looks logical from one POV looks insane from another. The way MTG judges the fight and the way Jeffries sees it are lightyears apart.

HobbitFoot,

The two of them have different goals in mind, so their strategies are going to be far different.

xkforce,

The GOP is already fighting tooth and nail. The only thing not taking their useful tool away does is… let them have their useful tool.

Dagwood222,

Here’s the thing about fights; everyone reacts differently to trouble. Some people will roll over if you push them, and others get more entrenched the worse they are treated. Jeffries has a crew of smart folks whose only job is to figure out which way each Member will react.

Brkdncr,

I honestly hope not. They should work with the democrats to put a better leader in place that is supported by the right amount of people. There’s no rule that says you have to vote party line.
