Bought some books - mostly again with Daunt Books Marylebone (@DauntBooksPub) 📚

(And yes, asking about whether I read out the ones I bought before would be extremely impolite 🙃)

@DauntBooksPub @vicgrinberg Ah, The Satanic Verses is great! So clever and funny and thought provoking and sad. Wish I had studied it with an English teacher. Enjoy!

@Annaspanner I'm looking forward to it! I've read it many years ago, back then in German translation, and it felt like the right moment to buy it in English (because the bookshop had it, because of Rushdie recently getting the German Booksellers' Piece Prize and because the book I was reading on the tube the same day I bought this one, Ian M Banks' The State of the Art mentioned it).

@vicgrinberg @DauntBooksPub What's the Ian Banks book? How are there new books of his?

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg @DauntBooksPub Not to worry, I went and found it on Amazon. Looks like I've found my Christmas present for this year.

@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@TacticalGrace_ @DauntBooksPub here is an info that someone has posted in the comments above - looks like there may be a second birthday present coming in a few years! https://astrodon.social/@swinbank/111354392101891120

@vicgrinberg @DauntBooksPub Oh blimey. I'm emailing Orbit books right now to see how long that hardback will be in production for, because I'm not entirely certain I can afford the €60 until next year, but I don't want to miss out on getting a copy. Hopefully it's a really big run, because it would be nice to have this to go with the signed copy of Matter I got when I met Iain.

@vicgrinberg @DauntBooksPub Ooh! That Culture book has been a long time coming (https://www.tor.com/2021/06/15/orbit-books-the-culture-iain-m-banks-companion-art-book/) and... I thought we still had a few more days to wait (https://www.orbit-books.co.uk/landing-page/orbit/the-culture-the-drawings/ lists it as “releasing 7 November 2023”). Very exciting!

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@swinbank @DauntBooksPub Ooooh, I did not realize! I just stumbled over the book in a corner of the bookstore and had to take it 😁

mann_ey,

@vicgrinberg @DauntBooksPub omg all of these look great
the Culture drawings, I wasn't even aware that was a thing?!

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@mann_ey neither was I! They are very much something Banks seems to have done for himself not for the publication but I enjoyed them (don'texpect professional artist work, though!) :)

@vicgrinberg @DauntBooksPub Big like! Currently also reading "Entangled Life". Loved the Culture Series and didn't know there is an art book about it, curious if it can hold up to the images that I had in my mind, Iain M Bank was excellent with describing landscapes after all. Also as a Koraen learner who is interested in the culture I should put the Tteokbokki book on my list (tteokbokki as a food are very yummy by the way).

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@meliache the Art book is a bit different - it's banks own sketches. So they aren't quiet artsy - but they show some of the thinking behind his designs (lots of handwritten notes on them). So it's more about the thinking behind it than actually art if that makes sense?

I'm curious about the book - it's a bit different to what I usually read but it somehow reminded me of "my lesbian experience with loneliness" which I loved so I got it (I go to this particular bookshop to be inspired like this).

sumomi,

@vicgrinberg oh, this looks like an awesome catch :blobcatlove:

And if anyone brings up the question of reading everything: what would a library be good for if you couldn't find something new in it to read. 📚❤️ As mentioned in this article from @openculture about Umberto Eco and the "virtue of Owning Books you haven't read" : https://www.openculture.com/2022/11/the-virtue-of-owning-books-you-havent-read-why-umberto-eco-kept-an-antilibrary.html

maelduin13,

@vicgrinberg @DauntBooksPub
It's very important to maintain a bookshelf stacked with unread books.

How else would you have lots of reading to look forward to?

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@maelduin13 the problem is that I have a lot more than one bookshelf with unread books 🤣 That said, I DO need lots since I never know what I will be in the mood for next!

maelduin13,

@vicgrinberg
You know you've got a problem if you have to give books away because you stopped being interested in the topic before you got round to reading them!

vicgrinberg,
@vicgrinberg@mastodon.social avatar

@maelduin13 well... 😬
