On the way to work... 🇳🇱

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg That's a cute little windmill. The town I grew up in back in the UK had a functional one that ground wheat.

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg I have to admit, despite being in my mid 40's, I never knew that Dutch windmills were used to pump water. It does make sense though, as you say. It would be quite soggy otherwise! If you do get to visit a functional farmers windmill I highly recommend doing so, it is a very unique experience.

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg That makes me feel better! I wonder how many windmills are still in use for that purpose in this day and age?

@vicgrinberg I'll second the suggestion of Iain M Banks. A wonderful man I was lucky enough to actually get to know a bit.

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg I don't think that's strange at all. I feel the exact same way. I've got a nice hardback copy of Matter that Iain gifted to me, and then signed for me, when I met up with him in Glasgow back in 2009. He was a great man, a wonderful author, and there's a lot of him in his work. Outside of the Culture novels, I can also recommend, if you haven't read them yet, Feersum Endjinn, and most of his regular fiction work, too.

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg I'm glad you've read that, it is genuinely one of my favourites. I would recommend caution when it comes to his regular fiction work, particularly The Wasp Factory, as that has some incredibly dark themes to it.

I bought a copy to read on the flight back to Bavaria from the UK, and finished it in about 3 hours. I'd only consider reading that on a nice bright sunny day, and when you're in a happy head space, or it could be quite unpleasant.

Found this bumblebee lying on the ground in our car port. Many insects get trapped under the glass & die, unfortunately 😕

I put the bee on a flower to feed, but when I checked back a bit later, it wasn’t active 😬

So exceptionally I gave it a little sugar water – I know it’s contentious – and it recovered 🙂

Not sure what species: perhaps a tree bumblebee (Bombus hypnorum), but with no trace of the normal white tail 🤨

H/T to Kelsey Trainor, for pointing out that
the women's college basketball finals today will get north of 14 million viewers... but will still not be aired in a primetime viewing slot.

One of the most watched sports events of the past decade! More than NBA finals. More than MLB world series. More than NHL Stanley cup finals. And they can't get a primetime slot?

This didn't just suddenly happen. The audience has been building for years. Last year was a huge indicator.

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke It's not even a close competition in terms of viewers. 9.9 million watched the 2023 Fall Classic, and the NCAA WBNC has already breached the 17 million viewers mark last Friday. A US friend of mine says they're actually expecting to hit at least 20 million viewers for the finals.

I'm tired of hearing about AI, to be honest. I never cared for it. I don't respect people who use generative AI, and I despise companies that sell out people's data to train it. Yes, people will lose jobs to it, but the world will not be better for it. It's just that consequences are rarely immediately apparent in such complex systems.

TacticalGrace_, (edited )
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron I've lost count of how many people I've blocked, including people I used to follow, who don't understand just how bad everything to do with generative AI, and AI in general, actually is for the environment, artists rights, and data privacy. It's alarming how many just go "Haha look, funny picture" and then dismiss all the problems out of hand.

Germany. Third biggest economy of the world. Airports are bright, clean and quiet. Fast trains only slightly less comfortable than a living room. Incredible levels of wealth wherever you look. The world is coming to Germany and is marveled. Yet, have a look into the newspapers and all you see is doomerism. How can one explain this?

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@dmoser Cost of living, high taxes, 2nd highest electricity prices on the planet, rise of fascism, ineffectual government, etc etc. Those are just some of the more obvious things I see as an Englishman living in Germany.

Windows-as-a-nuisance: How I clean up a “clean install” of Windows 11 and Edge | Ars Technica
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/02/what-i-do-to-clean-up-a-clean-install-of-windows-11-23h2-and-edge/

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@n3wjack I would also strongly recommend a piece of software called "StartAllBack", which gives users back the ability to move the taskbar (Something Microsoft have publicly claimed they won't do because it is too difficult. Yes, really) along with putting the right-click context menus back to the way they were in previous iterations of Windows. There's also a ton of other modifications, both visual and behind the scenes, that the software can do. All for $5.

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@n3wjack https://www.startallback.com/ Here's the software I mentioned. Having spoken to someone from Microsoft myself, they were adamant that Windows 11's design is "Complete" in that particular area, and they won't be changing it.

TacticalGrace_,
@TacticalGrace_@mastodon.social avatar

@n3wjack They claim they won't ever do it because it "Might" break some of their advertising widgets in the start menu, because apparently making icons that can be re-sized to fit a vertical taskbar is somehow beyond them. Not beyond a single dev working on it on weekends, but absolutely beyond a multi-trillion dollar company.
