UCI really screwed things up for ergonomics when they outlawed recumbents in the 1930s.

"The press coverage kicked off a long-overdue conversation about women’s saddle issues and aired one of pro cycling’s open secrets: that some women suffer so much damage to their genital areas they resort to surgery—labiaplasty—to keep riding."

@meganL genuine question, aren't recumbents difficult to maneuver on climbs, downhills and sharp corners? Or are these myths?

@mariusor Depends on the design (lots of variety in recumbent design), but I'd say they're largely myths.

If they were actually good in competition, UCI would never have banned them...they wouldn't have needed to. UCI banned them because a recumbent was winning races.

They don't have the advantage of being able to get up on the pedals and cheat with gravity as uprights have, and that can affect hills. It's all you, not gravity.

@mariusor This video isn't mesh recumbents, but the seats also don't put weight on the genitals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD53YiygVhA

Recumbents tend to be more aerodynamic so any time you potentially lose on uphills is easy to make up downhill.

@meganL I can not not upvote a Hank riding a recumbent video. :D
