After 2 - 3 weeks of trying both @protonmail and @fastmail I have decided to fully switch to Proton going forward.

With Proton you get email, ProtonPass, Proton VPN and other stuff. You also get 500GB of storage instead of the measly little 100GB of storage that Fastmail offers. Notifications on Fastmail were also VERY VERY delayed most of the time, on both Android and iOS.

@cliffwade @protonmail @fastmail You get push notifications on Proton on Android without having Google Play services because I never have.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@shortwavesurfer2009 I get notifications on both Android and iOS without problems. On Android, I use Google Play Services, so I don't know what the experience is like without Google Play Services.

@protonmail @fastmail

@shortwavesurfer2009@digitaldarkage.cc avatar

@cliffwade @protonmail @fastmail Without Google Play Services on Android, you do not get Proton mail notifications at all. I have never had a notification from the Proton app and have been using it for years without play services. In my opinion, they either need to integrate unified push support or do a check for new messages say once an hour.

@shortwavesurfer2009 @cliffwade @fastmail Thanks for the feedback, well share it with the team. For now, to clarify, Proton push notifications on Android and Apple are encrypted.

DragonD,

@cliffwade @protonmail @fastmail I went with fastmail couple years back. How many email alias does proton let you have?

TheRealStu,

@DragonD @cliffwade @protonmail @fastmail Unlimited hide my email aliases (only on Proton Unlimited)

protonmail,
@protonmail@mastodon.social avatar

@TheRealStu @DragonD @cliffwade Hi! We'd just like to correct you on this - you can have an unlimited number of email aliases on several Proton subscriptions: Proton Pass Plus, Proton Unlimited, Proton Family, Proton Visionary, and Proton Business.

DragonD,

@protonmail @TheRealStu @cliffwade what's this changed? Didn't you guys have a 10 alisas limit before? Or was I hallucinating :androidalt:

protonmail,
@protonmail@mastodon.social avatar

@DragonD @TheRealStu @cliffwade We still have a limit of 10 additional addresses on the Proton Mail Plus plan: https://proton.me/mail/pricing. Proton Pass email aliases are, however, something else: https://proton.me/support/addresses-and-aliases

@cliffwade
How does the fee structure compare?

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@taatm What do you mean exactly?

You can pay monthly or yearly, if that's what you are asking about.

beardedtechguy,
@beardedtechguy@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade @protonmail @fastmail Thanks for the input. Proton was my next to really give it a trial. As you know, I’m needing a cross-platform password manager which I’m currently using Bitwarden and loving.

For email, I’ll probably just forward my gmail and outlook to my iCloud though. VPN, I’m still trying to find that “one”.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@beardedtechguy Is ProtonPass cross-platform? I honestly don't know if it is or not as I've not looked. Something I likely should do.

Have you tried Proton's VPN? It's decently good in my opinion, but I'm not an expert on VPN's by any means.

beardedtechguy,
@beardedtechguy@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade Yeah ProtonPass is. I haven’t tied it or the VPN though.

heyfluxay,
@heyfluxay@retro.pizza avatar

@beardedtechguy i fully switched to proton earlier last year and have zero regrets

beardedtechguy,
@beardedtechguy@allthingstech.social avatar

@heyfluxay Tell me more!

heyfluxay,
@heyfluxay@retro.pizza avatar

@beardedtechguy it just works, I had been using it for my podcast, and decided to dump gmail and use my domain mail for my main personal email as well, just forwarded my other inboxes in.

I like their focus on security and privacy.

nairb_db,

@cliffwade @protonmail I love Proton and understand the requirement, but man being forced to use their client on mobile is frustrating as it’s not great.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@nairb_db While I don't use mobile very often, as I'm at my PC 95% of the time, what is it about their mobile app that isn't good? And are you referring to their Android or iOS app?

@protonmail

nairb_db,

@cliffwade it’s just the inability to use the account with anything else and being forced to use the official app, It’s not horrible, I just want to only have to use a single app for mail.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@nairb_db Oh, gotcha! That certainly makes sense.

Curious, what app would you prefer to use for all emails?

nairb_db,

@cliffwade idk necessarily, just something where I don’t have 3 apps receiving email lol

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@cliffwade I reallllllly need to make this switch away from using Gmail. Like, yesterday.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@britt Do it! You won't regret it, I promise.

It was a VERY HARD thing for me to do. But I sat down a few weeks ago and said you know what, I'm not going to keep putting this off and I made the switch. Tried both Fastmail and Proton, and now I've made my decision to stick with Proton all the way.

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@cliffwade I’ve used apple’s paid mail services for about 20 years now… and then also gmail, but only for the past 12 years or so. Thanks for reminding me to take a deeper look into alternatives. :)

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@britt Oh, so you're not new to paying for email, unlike myself. I'd been with Gmail from day one so this was tougher to make the switch.

Definitely give them a try and move away from Gmail as soon as you can!

protonmail,
@protonmail@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffwade @britt Thank you for recommending us, Cliff!

Psionmark,
@Psionmark@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffwade good choice - I’m in the process of switching over fully to Proton, too.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Psionmark Oh nice! What are you switching from if you don't mind me asking?

What made you switch, or want to switch from free to paid, assuming you're going with a paid plan.

Psionmark,
@Psionmark@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffwade I’ve been using a paid-for Fastmail plan for years but I was using Proton more and more for stuff like their Drive as well as email. I was initially attracted by the privacy aspect but it also worked out cheaper to just switch to them for everything. Was also using 1Password and another VPN but I’ve now got the Proton package that has all of that so made sense to fully switch. Once Proton added the Snooze function, that was my cue to jump ship 😊

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Psionmark Ah, very nice! I originally thought as well that Fastmail was the better option for me since I was only going to do email. I had already paid for the ProtonVPN a year or so ago, but as stated, rarely used it. But now I'm going to force myself to use it, since I have the Proton bundle as well.

In the end, it comes out to be a bit more expensive than Fastmail I believe, but I get a LOT more stuff with Proton, obviously.

Psionmark,
@Psionmark@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffwade yeah that’s the way I looked at it. I was “saving” the cost of 1Password and a third party VPN so Proton worked out cheaper for me and also provides with me with the secure drive etc. It’s a good service. Now I just need to try and convince people that privacy is worthwhile lol.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Psionmark Well, the ones that you can't easily convince, likely deserve to stay on that side of things. 🤪

lomanfeusagach,
@lomanfeusagach@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffwade @protonmail @fastmail good choice. Are you going to use the free tier or a paid option, I assume the free tier based on your comment?

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@lomanfeusagach I am a paying customer. I already had their VPN but rarely use it, but trying to change that. I will likely switch from Bitwarden over to ProtonPass and then pay for the mail side of things.

@protonmail @fastmail

lomanfeusagach,
@lomanfeusagach@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffwade @protonmail I have been reviewing it to swap out the family plan I have with Google. Up until a little while ago the lack of backups for photos was a sticking point, which they added recently. I will probably miss Google Photos most and a little of Google Workspace, but not that far away from making the move soon. YouTube Premium is the bit that is taking up the relevant funds for the moment and that is very difficult to replace.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@lomanfeusagach Very interesting.

Walking away from Google Photos would be super difficult for me, but something I could see doing relatively soon. Thing is, everything there stays, so not like I'd lose it. Just switch to something new and new stuff would be there.

Google Workspace I personally don't use. I use Google Drive, so I need to see about moving that stuff over to Proton Drive, though that will take up a ton of my space! I have a LOT in Drive.

lomanfeusagach,
@lomanfeusagach@mastodon.social avatar

@cliffwade oh actually perhaps not with the 500Gb storage.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@lomanfeusagach Correct. I'm paying for the 500GB plan. I need all the storage space I can get. LOL

Fred,
@Fred@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade @protonmail @fastmail Great to know. I've been considering switching away from Gmail for years.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Fred I've been with Gmail since long before they were public and long before invites were public. I got in super early, so about 20 - 21 years now.

I never thought, not even 2 - 3 years ago, that I'd ever consider paying for email, much less actually paying for it. I don't think I'll ever go back to a free email service.

@protonmail @fastmail

Fred,
@Fred@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade @protonmail @fastmail besides the Gmail privacy advertisement conversation. What would be some other reasons you would tell me to convince me to leave Gmail for a paid service? Just wondering

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Fred Privacy is number one. Lack of spam and ads of course as well.

The ability to mask your email and create throw-away email addresses basically. Think virtual credit card numbers. Give a site the email address you create so they don't know your actual email address, then delete it if you need to.

Much better UI on desktop. I use Simplify for Gmail, created by ex Google Inbox for Gmail developer, to make it look better. Proton/Fastmail neither one need that.

Fred,
@Fred@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade great info as usual. Definitely something to start seriously thinking about.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Fred Also, thanks to @jcrabapple of course, I'm now paying for search as well. I am now using Kagi as my search engine and not using Google any longer, which again, I've been using for 25+ years.

Same story, weird to pay for something we've done for free for decades, but search results are so much better and not ton of crap to sift through to find what you're looking and you avoid all the tracking links and all of that mess.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@Fred Paying for email is a tough thing to consider, especially with someone like us who has used a service like Gmail forever now. But it's really turning in to a thing that needs to be done for reasons mentioned prior.

I also imported most of my important emails that I needed/wanted from Gmail into both Proton and Fastmail. Super simple to do.

protonmail,
@protonmail@mastodon.social avatar

@Fred @cliffwade Happy to hear this Cliff! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us here. This applies to you too, Fred, once you start making your switch :)
