Pals, what's the least egregious TV I can buy today, in the UK?
I want as little "smart" internet-connected nonsense as possible. Not bothered about 4k or massive size, but it should sound and look good.

That is, what's the Brother laser printer of TVs?

@christianp You should be aware that the cheaper TVs monitor what you watch and sell the data. It’s a choice where very few both know about it and care enough.

UK regulation is good on notifications so with an LG TV you will be notified and asked to give permission. If you don’t give permission they won’t snoop but they also won’t activate the smart services. This is of course after you have bought it and is where regulation failed.

You can dodge this by using an Apple TV puck or something, and not connecting the TV to the internet. The downside is you are using two remotes.

I’m not saying “don’t by a cheap TV” but I am saying this is a thing so you can make an informed choice.

TV’s as a physical thing. Sony is top but expensive, Samsung and LG are close in quality but better value.

@christianp The industry is pushing for large TV’s as the cost per panel only goes up a little bit but the price goes up considerably. They make a lot more money on bigger TVs.

I say this regularly as I think people need to hear it. Ukraine cannot lose this war. Not as in ‘we can’t afford to let Ukraine lose’, as in ‘Russia cannot win this war’.

Russia has attacked the idea of Europe. There is nothing more scary to Europe than that. Europe is in this fight and Europe is bigger and scarier than Russia. Europe’s kindness was mistaken for weakness.

You will see the continuation of the escalating minimum from Europe. Ukraine cannot lose, so Russia cannot win, so Ukraine will win.

And that’s just Europe. And then there is , who are clearly a superior army to Russia, to hold them off.

Oh, and we also have the USA so Russia is totally fucked. So very, very fucked.

I have worked out why that advert that says “earn 5.2% on your pounds”, jars when I hear it. It’s because it’s a literal translation of a US script.

In the US you can say “earn 5.2% on your dollars” and I’m used to that use of it. It’s normal for dollars. However, we’d never say “on your pounds” in the UK. We don’t have it that way. It would be “on your money”.

So it’s a lazy translation and a bit uncanny valley, which is why it jars.

What is fantastic about the US vote is that the impact is immediate, and I don’t just mean morale.

If your existing stock of HIMARS is all you may ever have, you hoard them. You keep them as an ace up your sleeve to be used only when things are desperate. Save the day HIMARS.

Now we know more are coming (it will pass the Senate) they can actually be used for how they were intended. No longer the last you’ll ever see but simply the ones to hand.

They can be fired at those many fat lazy targets that didn’t pay attention to being in range. All those that thought they were safe while they harmed your country. We can now stop that desperate day from ever happening. The same for shells and guns etc.

Every recipe says I should be done with this bread dough after 10-15 minutes. I'm 30 minutes in and it's just about starting to look like it might hold together one day.

You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian 🙋🏿‍♂️

Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

Also as a white dude I have also been asked if I’m trying to sound smart saying a word. The answer is simply that it was the most appropriate word. Some times the water is best described as temperate.

I would guess that the countries under colonialism got the English of the day and get the English of today, whereas us English of today have only the drift. I would guess that also applies to the US given their now cultural dominance. Nigeria amplifies this through their culture.

I need to delve more into this incongruence.
