Thorny_Insight,

The interest for Chinese electric cars sure seems to be high on this platform considering the general attitude towards privacy here

It’s relevant to the larger industry. I don’t want to buy a BYD car, but I want to know about their products and how they’re impacting the space.

tacosanonymous,

I feel any new car has the same problem. So, it’s really a moot point.

blujan,

To be fair china’s electric cars are way more barebone than American ones, so even tho i don’t think they are private enough they can work without telemetry (or with it removed)

What about Polestar? Those aren’t barebones at all.

blujan,

Oh yeah those are not barebones, but I am sure they are not necessarily included as they aren’t made in china and the telemetry is done by google

Polestars are currently built in China, but another manufacturing plant will open in the US later this year because the import taxes are higher than the increased US manufacturing costs.

As for the Google part, it’s basically just Android Automotive (not to be confused with Android Auto), which a number of automakers are adopting as their core infotainment platform. Volvo / Polestar worked closely with Google at first because they were one of the earliest adopters. Volvo / Polestar was the guinea pig for Android Automotive
