Falling birth rates are good. It's bad news for global capitalism because it needs ever-increasing demand or the system collapses. As for individual countries, the answer to an ageing population is more immigration from countries with high birth rates.
A declining population would be an opportunity to make the world a better place. Unfortunately, we're still stuck in old ideas that don't work any more.

There has been a decades long attempt to curb birth rates. The economic nightmare scenario for global capitalism is places like Gaza with a fertility rate of 8. Capitalism prefers stability over all else.

Population growth does matter, in a limited sense, to a soup company because for them to grow there have to be more people to buy soup. Growth firms grow because society has allocated an inadequate amount of capital to meet the demand for the product. However, the soup company will rescale their supply to meet the population.
