"full-screen, sound-on video ads" -- exactly what Twitter users have been asking for!

Keep driving users away. 👍

McChessers, in If you're ever feeling sad or let down by Reddit or the Internet or whatever, remember that zombo.com is always there for you

I am sure that part of it is how discoverability has diminished over time. It seems there are fewer ways to find interesting independent things on the web. But, I'm also sure that some of it is there's fewer cool things to find.

With that said, please enjoy endless.horse, which is one of those cool things the likes of which I wish finding were easier.

"Microsoft Edge has many convenient features to improve browsing your experience" There we go. Seems like Microsoft doesn't make anything that isn't invasive any more.

Don't use edge. Problem solved

Yes, let's emulate the guy whose company lost 59% of its ad revenue and is being evicted from its office buildings due to delinquent rent. Surely this will increase profitability.

That's just goofy. Imagine saying that after everything E*** M*** has done to Twitter. Shoot, even if you do want to emulate the way Twitter has ran itself into the ground, at least be smart enough not to tell users and (potential) investors about it. (Although I guess I do respect the honesty.)

I believe they want us out of reddit.
And by us I mean those who use 3rd party apps, therefore don't watch ads. Us who have ublock origin on our web browser etc.

circuitfarmer,

The ads are the main part, plain and simple. Any other factor is smoke and mirrors. The want to IPO, just have to follow the money.

nightauthor,

I don't get the 'ad' justification. Because, if they wanted to make up for the lost ad revenue, they just needed to charge around 100th of what they decided. Huffman stated they're aware of AI people training with reddit data, and I think it's clear that they're pricing the API to capitalize on AI training, everyone else be damned.

SpaceNoodle, in Reddit CEO is more unhinged than I suspected: Huffman said he saw Musk’s handling of Twitter, which he purchased last year, as an example for Reddit to follow.

Naturally, Huffman explicitly stated in an earlier interview that he did not look to other platforms for examples of how to run reddit. It's safe to assume that anything that comes out of his mouth is lie.

Don't forget to backup your content from reddit, delete it on reddit, and repost it on the fediverse! The high quality content (provided for free) is what made reddit so valuable, so if we take that way, it eventually will hit reddit's bottom line.

Come on Reddit lets get this going

Drama, in Lets show Reddits CEO who's in charge !

Best game plan is to just not care about Reddit. It won’t die today or this year, but if the alternatives gets good enough we have a fighting chance long term. Just talking about Reddit isn’t going to get us there though!

Elsa that shit.

spooky_ghost,

I think if the community stays strong and voices our opinion on the recent changes we will be able to make a difference.
Just remember that if the board sees this as a real issue they will have to compromise or totally revert the changes.

I don't think we have to protest that long if everybody is really load about the issues

Yep, I feel like I'm 20 again (born in 1980, been through BBS, dialup, ADSL, cable, altavista.com and many other things)

Im only 19, but I got a glimpse of it as a kid. It's great that i'm able to experience what this is like for the first time, most of the internet felt so hopeless before.

I've been on the Internet since I was 15 so in 1995. I was on ICQ, Usenet and other old technologies. Internet sure has changed a lot since. But I'm excited to be part of the fediverse, it is still in its infancy but I think it will become big. Hopefully not big enough to get riddled with adds or get bought by google or others.

Have you noticed how many of us old shits there are in the fediverse? It's a disproportionate number. I think many of us miss the freedom and chaos that the internet once was and are looking to recapture the excitement that the internet lost at least a decade ago.

albsen,

This! Yes, you're absolutely right. Its the new gen that's never seen proper blinking warez sites that have OK buttons floating around so you can't click em... Joking aside, fediverse is awesome.

richardazia,

We don't miss the freedom. We know that we have a choice. We're from the age of web communities being twenty to thirty people large. In those days communities were small. Now we're shouting in a crowded room, to be heard. It's nice to migrate, and find places where we're heard, without having to be loud.

coupland,

Yup, I went through all those same stages and am loving the Fediverse. I had forgotten how it felt to have to EXPLORE. To find good content, to see something that's (only mildly) outside my comfort zone, to use a tool that's still a WIP. I spent 15 years on Alien Site and it was just the same jokes, the same content, all the same topics, the endless commercialization of every word you say.

No it's not as easy to find content here. No the apps aren't as polished. But it really feel like how I felt back in the BBS or Slashdot days. I hadn't realized how miserable I was with the current state of the internet until I abandoned all the mainstream sites.

richardazia,

You're an allosaur of the web like me. ;-). We were here before even the dinosaurs. ;-)
