In the early 2000's, distros had avoided packaging because of its closed toolkit roots even though Xfce had been via the GPL since 1999.

was the first major distribution to package Xfce at 3.8 in 2002! followed with Xfce 4.4 in Etch in 2007.

16bit,

@linuxuserspace That’s really interesting. I was using it on Gentoo around that time and had no idea it was so controversial. I just needed something for an ancient machine that ran well and still looked nice.

@16bit That's so cool! It would have still looked a whole lot like CDE then. Did you enjoy that part?

@linuxuserspace fyi @JoeRess . The Linux User Space show have been covering some Linux desktop history recently. An episode or two ago was on CDE, and this one covers XFCE. I found it super interesting. :)

@pauldoo @JoeRess Really appreciate the share. Thank you 😊

kc8sbv,

@linuxuserspace About the time Gnome2 went into the dumps, I switched to XFCE, and it's been my daily driver ever since. I've always like that it avoided the drama of other desktops

@kc8sbv Taking things slow and steady really helps with the drama. ;)
