Do any #linux folks out there still compile their own #kernels? I've never done this and part of me is thinking I'd like to try it out. In the #OpenBSD world, the one I learned Unix on, it wasn't something generally encouraged.
@ablackcatstail It's a heck of a lot of work. Do-able, but definitely high on the challenge list (particularly since there are a lot of package dependencies downstream to get OTHER stuff to load).
@ai6yr I was merely curious because I remember hearing about people building custom kernels back in the earlier days of Linux, circa 1998ish. By then I was solidly on OpenBSD so I never really thought about it nor cared to try. It was just a passing thought anyhoo ....
@ablackcatstail It might be fun from an intellectual/technical challenge. The reason people have gone to specific distributions, I think, is the whole integration with specific flavors of drivers and packaging schemes, interdependencies, etc. I used to build custom Linux kernels (way back in the early days), but that was for a very controlled environment... even then it was a pain to get packages working (since most are built for specific distros)
@ai6yr That's the approach I was kind of thinking: as an intellectual/technical challenge but there are other challenges ultimately more interesting to me anyway.
