Please, please, PLEASE folks uploading to , be mindful of the size of the picture and file you're uploading. First, we have to store those large , and second, extremely large images don't do well with the native image preview function. Have been seeing it a lot recently, and makes me wonder if a particular third party app is at fault.

Also, if you're a developer, please take a moment and check that you're not dumping the full size image onto the network. Let's help each other out here. It looks better, and we admins aren't paying to store images that don't need to be that big!

Hate to think it, but it might be time for some internal image compression functionality in mastodon. I love the quality of the images, it's just becoming too much to store.

@wxstationexpert I always reduce the size of my images before uploading, but what size should we be shooting for (on photos with a reasonable amount of detail)?

@glightly @wxstationexpert Or is it the end user's responsibility? I'd think the interface, whether the web or the app, should take care of resizing the uploaded images as necessary. I never reduce the sizes of the images I upload.

@daihard @glightly @wxstationexpert a huge problem is that if you paste an image from your clipboard, Mastodon stores it as a PNG rather than JPEG. PNG is a lossless format appropriate for diagrams, pixel art or screenshots, but not for photographs, memes, flyers, book covers, etc., taking ~6 times the disk space.

I filed an issue asking for Mastodon to default to converting uploaded images to JPEG. Edit: looks like a dev finally responded to it today! https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/25571

@graue @daihard @glightly @wxstationexpert it probably doesn't help that phones have gotten amazing camera resolution and networks fast enough that uploading it isn't a noticeable delay. It would be good if the UI had some way to crop and scale down the image as part of the posting, especially if it could be done client-side.
