Thinking about moving instances; feel a bit isolated where I am. Any suggestions? , , ?

crossgolf_rebel,

@Melpomene This is not due to the instance but to the activities.
If you are more passive in the Fediverse, then the Fediverse is more passive to you

Activity and networking is the key

@crossgolf_rebel Smaller instances are less visible by default. While that can be mitigated -somewhat- by networking, it is much easier to just sign up to a popular instance. I dislike the attitude that people just need to try harder to network... It is gatekeeping at its finest.

crossgolf_rebel,

@Melpomene This is not gatekeeping, but just one of several measures you can take to improve your networking. And it's one that you can control yourself.

There are also technical ways to increase visibility and networking. One would be followBots, which collect contacts across all instances and thus promote federation. The other would be to integrate relay servers. Technically, they are very similar.

Gatekeeping is also a stupid accusation that people make to blame others. I don't like that at all and it doesn't make it any more true.
What do I want to gatekeep from?

stupid post

@crossgolf_rebel "Well, you're doing it wrong" is an unhelpful approach that alienates users. You're upset that I called your blaming users for not feeling included gatekeeping ("you just need to try harder" was the gist of your post) but you're perfectly fine throwing out blame when it suits you.

The average person using an instance isn't in a position to implement tech solutions, nor should they feel like they have to. This is essentially the 90's Linux Bro "just write your own code" argument repurposed for the Fedi.

"It's your fault because you don't integrate relay servers and bots and just make this a second job" is about the silliest thing I've read today. But it's early.

And here we come back to the point that every statement can be seen from two sides.

You can see an answer as help or as instruction. Until the MuskWave, answers to questions were generally seen as help. This negative connotation to problem solving has only been added in the last 2-3 years and has destroyed the help here in the Fediverse.

On the one hand, new users are entering a completely different network with completely different mechanisms and approaches. On the other hand, they demand that everything works the way they did before, without showing any willingness to learn or wanting to learn.
Your accusation about gatekeeping also goes in exactly the same direction.

I would be to blame because something doesn't work the way you want it to and the network here uses other tools for your problem.
That's cheap populism.
I have people in my timeline who were already on here when it wasn't so convenient. People who don't know IT, pensioners far removed from anything you could call a nerd.

I didn't write about "your fault", I pointed out the possibility of improving the situation. And that brings us back to the point above, accepting help as help and not misunderstanding it as a lecture.

You are scapegoating the bearer of information

And great reaction to then block the user because you don't like the answers

Melpomene,
@Melpomene@erisly.social avatar

@crossgolf_rebel @crossgolf_rebel Hey Buddy?

When you're blocked, I'm pretty sure its considered an asshole move to try to circumvent that block by using alts.

So rather than come back in with your alt to spew a multi-post manifesto, take the hint and go away. You weren't blocked because I "didn't like the answers," you were blocked because I have zero interest in a "you're doing it wrong" tech bro diatribe offering ridiculous solutions to end users that few have the time or inclination to implement.

And in case it gets lost in translation: Go away. You are not welcome in my @.

@msdropbear42 I'll have to check some of them out when I return. On the road so might be a less than ideal time to experiment.

@Melpomene I'm on mastodon.online, and it's pretty active.

@TheLastofHisName Once upon a time I had an account there. It was busy for sure! Torn between a mid-size instance and a huge one.
