I should have stayed a night or two in hospital but I didn’t wanna. 😔

Now I swear doc thought I was faking and wouldn’t give me a script for anything stronger than nurofen.

I have terrible pain but limited loss in joint and muscle mobility and strength

this is what happens when you’re a fitter than most people your age ( which is pathetic considering I’m unfit ) and diligently do sciatica exercises all the time

It’s still janky and was difficult without having a razorblade and sandpaper… but I used a hobby knife and found an emery board. The charcoal pencil now looks more like the one in the video.

Edit: Melbcat has smooched the emery board and is grumpily having her face wiped

VapoRub now comes in an applicator thingy so you don’t have to get it all over your hands and it is truly brilliant.

LowExperience2368,

People with office jobs who didn’t want an office job, how did you get to where you are? I am an ADHDer (and yes I know I can’t use it as an excuse) who wants to get into teaching but I’m being discouraged by basically everyone and I also want to consider my options. But I don’t see myself sitting at a desk for ages at a time.

Also, second question incoming. I saw some people on the beach today hitting a ball back and forth with bats that looked like cricket bats but the top of the bat was shaped like a lacrosse one. So imagine a cricket bat with a lacrosse shaped head. Does anyone know what this kind of bat is? Just a special cricket bat?

Find some kids to tutor online for an hour for free. You’ll soon find out if you really want to teach.

LowExperience2368,

I’m already tutoring whilst working in retail and am sacrificing doing bigger retail shifts on the days that I tutor. I also volunteered on an online educational forum for about five years helping kids with questions relating to VCE and science.

CEOofmyhouse56,
@CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone avatar

That’s really good. I only suggested it because my daughter found someone online to help her through VCE maths methods this year. I didn’t know it was a thing until she told me.

You’re a smart cookie. You will find what you’re looking for. I know it!

I think that’s called “Jai Alai” in America, pelota elsewhere. Sort of a hand held bat with a basketlike scoop arrangement on the top. Like a woomera but for a ball. Very fast and quite dangerous game due to the sheer speed of the ball.

Teaching is a calling. For the amount of work you do, and the amount of shit you have to deal with, it doesn’t pay well. Good teachers do it because it’s honestly what they want to do. Don’t pick teaching if you are unsure what you want to do.

That said, you can do a world of good in hundreds of kids’ lives if you can get past the challenges of ADHD and teach. You can serve as a wonderful example for kids on the spectrum, and help them as they try to navigate a world that isn’t designed with them in mind. You can advocate for these kids and really help their parents understand how to relate to them.

I’ve spent most of the day feeling lethargic and tired and blah on the couch slowly getting through a book (The Ocean at the End of the Lane). Did not do chilli paste although I got as far as taking the ice cube tray out of the fridge. Too lazy to look at anything in the kitchen after making an omelette with gem squash in it.

Having a go at watching Station Eleven. I feel like any stories about future pandemics will be written very differently (I am aware this was written for tv and filmed in 2020-2021 even if the book was written a decade ago…) If the characters don’t make some reference to the panini, the authors’ writing would have to be informed by it. They’d know how information and panic really spreads.

@bull@aussie.zone avatar

I would like more references to the panini!

I lived through SARS somewhat full on a teenager overseas - schools closed, primitive e-learning and all, empty-ish streets, pretty bloody scary news - and it always annoyed me that nobody really wrote that experience into fiction as much after that. Fair enough, I guess most people never really went through it like with covid.

Thornburywitch,
@Thornburywitch@aussie.zone avatar

There’s a lot of literature on the topic already. Albert Camus’ The Plague, Stephen King’s The Stand to name just two. Plus a lot of sci-fi. Might could be that the writing community is still processing and still looking for a new angle to write to on the topic.

melbaboutown,

I actually began writing something about a plague and quarantine attempts based on a dream I had a year or two before covid. I uh… think it’s best I don’t write anymore

bacon,

-wave in SARS 1 kid-

We didn’t have much e-learning. The school tried but people barely had broadband so it didn’t really work. Pretty much just waited till it was over. That’s why I thought this one would be over in a few months too. Come SARS 2 as soon as the rumours hit masks were sold out everywhere.

In the book I’ve been listening to, they mention Powdered Eggs so I just had a bit of a look online at what exactly they are. Turns out they’re just dehydrated eggs and APPARENLTY they scramble up quite nicely but I’m dubious.

Anyone scrambled up some powdered eggs? I might Science this bitch up next time I go to the supermarket. How bad could they be? Surely not as bad as the ready to pour eggs you can get in those milk carton styles because I tried them once and they suuuuuucked.

SituationCake,

Sounds awful. Also why? I see no need for them unless living in Antarctica. You can get eggs pretty much anywhere and fresh eggs last for at least a month. Useless processing to produce an inferior product? I would always use a real egg.

just_kitten,
@just_kitten@aussie.zone avatar

Could be great for long distance hiking… living in the outback maybe… hotels and mass food production… commercial bakers…

Nath,
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

They are great for hiking. Dehydrated everything (fruit, yoghurt, eggs, meat etc) is great because it weighs a lot less and doesn’t have to be kept cold. This matters when you set out on a week+ long hike.

Eagle,
@Eagle@aussie.zone avatar

I bought some in pandemic times just to have in the cupboard. I used them up in baking without any noticeable difference, but idk about scrambling them. They don’t look like an egg when you reconstitute them.

Seagoon_,
@Seagoon_@aussie.zone avatar

When I was a kid there used to be an Egg Drive in schools for the hospitals. Kids would bring in a raw egg to donate, all the eggs would be sent somewhere where they were dehydrated for use in kitchen hospitals

Thornburywitch,
@Thornburywitch@aussie.zone avatar

Best used in cake mixes instead of fresh eggs. I don’t like them scrambled - lived through too many powdered egg scrambles at school back in the old days. Might be different doing them yourself.

RustyRaven,
@RustyRaven@aussie.zone avatar

They are ok for scrambled eggs, but fresh is definitely better. I use powdered egg in cooking a bit as it is much easier when you do a single serve and need a fraction of an egg.

melbaboutown,

Wondering if it’s time to do a bit of a destash. A small bookshelf is full of tubs of knitting/crochet needles all going dusty.

I am still interested in crafting but there isn’t a space set up to be sewing with the machine, I don’t want to drop a pin or stray thread for kitty to eat, and I seriously burned out on knitting/crochet after the LDs. (I even have to push myself on doing art.) Might keep a spare ball or two for unfinished projects just in case but wondering if most of the the random balls of acrylic could go. Maybe even the granny squares too.

Then the needles and books could fit in a plastic tub and room could be made in the cupboard to store them away. Then the art stuff could go on the cleared bookshelves.

No idea where this energy is going to come from though. It will have to happen one task at a time as possible. I’m also having to fight the pack rat in me

Bottom_racer,

Nice walk around the golf course today. played like shit but it’s still a win weather wise.

The main thing I was thinking about walking around was the sunset beach dins and have concluded it will be a mcmuffin knockoff with egg, bacon, cheese, cheese kransky (took me way too long find at woolies yesterday), jalapeno, chilli jam, tomato sauce and mayo.

Beach dins until the world ends!

Which is naturally today’s rave choon:

Also saw a bit of the cadel evans roadbike GOR race. Damn they move impressively quickly. Seems a bit pointless being a spectator when it takes a few seconds until they’re out of sight.

Got home at 4.30. So tired. Taught how to mix my meds better, doc made a precise diagnosis ( minor pinch of L3 ) , was told I’ll get better in 3 weeks, was referred to a specialist back pain program by the physio there, I am surprisingly limber for my age ( I do heaps of physio at home already) blood pressure etc is awesome. They wanted me to stay overnight but I wanted to be home.

I learnt a new phrase. Furniture walking.

Duenan,
@Duenan@aussie.zone avatar

Oowww. That’s got to be painful.

Doesn’t take much to pinch a nerve either but super painful and only gets worse over time.

Hope the meds are able to take the edge off and that you get better soon.

When I was really bad the worst bits were trying to roll over, and putting socks on. So much sympathy!

Eagle,

@Seagoon_ much sympathy, I'm c6-c7 and now it looks like c4-c5, as MRI 4 months ago when the c6-c7 herniated showed a c4-c5 which became symptomatic just as the c6-7 settled down. It's scary to contemplate that this might continue regularly the rest of my life, it's fucking agonising. Still haven't worked out ideal pain meds. Opiods do nothing.

StudChud,

Lol I posted this is the wrong thread, here’s the garnet I bought from my local crystal shop, Sacred Gems.

I don’t think rocks and minerals have energy in the way most of those shops purport, however I do love shiny, cool looking rocks!

Watching the WWE Royal Rumble with Elder, he loves the spectacle of the wrestling and the entertainment. Must say I’m kinda enjoying it myself. Doing exercises on the fitball at the same time because I’ve turned into a fat bastard over the holidays and it’s time for me to get back into shape. I’ve put on about 8kg since my birthday last year, but the fun’s over and it’s time to get a bit more active. I think this year I’ll focus less on trying to do my X minutes of exercise per day, and instead try to focus on finding activity that’s enjoyable for me and the family. Elder needs more exercise than he’s getting and should be more active for a child his age. Mr P doesn’t exercise much and doesn’t walk anywhere. Miniest is a freak who is double jointed and always wriggling about, so there’s one I don’t have to worry about so much!

melbaboutown, (edited )

Ah :(

Cat poo talk, bloodMelbcat did a sus black poo which makes me wonder if the metacam/meloxicam has caused gut bleeding again. Emergency vet has said as long as she’s acting ok I can monitor and call the normal vet. I’ve fired off an email to the normal vet with pics and will follow up with a call when they open tomorrow.

Catfish,

Ah yes the revolting “for vet” photo set. Hope she’s ok.

Fingers crossed! There was a more normal one right behind it so I’m hoping it’s nothing serious or I’m just imagining issues. But better to address it

Better to be safe than sorry.

More often than not it’s not your imagination but just self doubt getting in the way.
