Ministers warn English councils not to adopt four-day working weeks

The council has said its continuing trial of the practice, in which office staff and bin collectors are paid the same for working 20% fewer hours, has already helped it improve recruitment and led to over £500,000 in savings on agency workers.

The cruelty as always, appears to be the point, since evidence shows it saves money.

@Tattooed_mummy it's like government being against working from home.

Increased efficiency and productivity (things the UK has historically sucked at) are beside the point. Better environmental impact and "levelling up" are beside the point.

The only point is another culture war, based on boomer concerns that the young 'uns don't work hard enough to keep them (the boomers) in the style to which they are accustomed.

Poor managers measure input.

Good managers measure output.

OldGitPhil,

@danjac @Tattooed_mummy Whenever you see someone in power criticising working from home, you don't need to look far to see that they benefit somehow from commercial property investments. They either have investments themselves or they are funded in part by someone who does.

@OldGitPhil @Tattooed_mummy yeah the Daily Mail was against lockdowns because it was losing paper sales from lack of commuters

An issue that surely should be worked out, industry by industry, employer by employer, with evidence?

Not a dictat from people scared their donors (landlords wanting rent in town centres) will object. What happened to government keeping its nose out of things?

I love that they’re trialling this.

But some of the Blue voters in the area are not happy - grumbling about how it shows that a better work-life balance can be achieved with lower rates of sickness and higher rates of retention, maintaining (or improving) levels of service whilst not making people poorer. 🤷‍♀️

@Tattooed_mummy What on earth have a council's working practices (assuming they are legal) got to do with central government?! Bollocks indeed!

@Tattooed_mummy Oh.

"The Scottish government is looking at piloting a four-day public sector working week later this year."
