FireOccator,

What did I just read? A news article or a blogger ranting?

The National Review is a right wing propaganda arm masquerading as journalism. Prior to January 6th, they had no problem with Trump. They're only turning on him now because he makes conservatives look bad, but notice how the author is still going on about Hillary's emails.

Take everything, even a piece like this, and everything out of Washington Examiner too, with a big grain of salt.

rebul,

Absolutely. To get real and unbiased news, I only use MSNBC and WaPo.

moneygrowsontrees,

I'm not so much worried over whether Trump will be convicted, but there still remains significant doubt that he'll actually be given consequences. There are no minimum penalties for any of the charges that I saw in the indictment (please correct me if I'm wrong) which means he could be convicted on all 38 counts, given a fine, and sent on his way. That just feels so in line with how things work now that it's depressing.

This article covers the guidelines for sentencing:

https://www.justsecurity.org/86901/how-much-prison-time-does-former-president-trump-face-applying-the-u-s-sentencing-guidelines/

Him having a leadership role and some of the documents being top secret don't bode well.

My concern is that judge.

I suspect that they won't be able to assemble a jury so he never gets taken to trial.

This guy has been caught out sooo many times Now. What are the odds something will finally be done with him? I don’t mean this metaphorically, does anyone know what the likelihood is of him seeing jail time?

As a non-American, let's just say that I'd be pleasantly surprised to see Trump locked up but I won't be holding my breath.
The system seems to be quite corrupt so the chances of some billionaire with friends in high places (that he helped put there) getting thrown in jail are low, imho.

geeker,

He needs to be thrown in jail.

Rocketman,

And he’ll still try to run for president from there.

Cor_bot,

Regardless who gets the nomination, the republican primary is going to be.... Entertaining is probably the best word to use

This article being published by the conservative National Review is what got my attention. I guess they're not MAGA, but still, not like they're MSNBC or anything

The editor-in-chief of the National Review doesn't seem particularly pro-Trump.

gerryk,

Genuine question. Why would anyone be pro-Trump? I mean, beyond those that stand to benefit politically through his re-instantiation.

In my experience the people who like Trump like him because he hates the people they hate, and nothing makes them feel better than having their shitty life experience validated by someone like that.

If its true... then who is the republican nominee?

HarkMahlberg,

Former guy has not quit the race despite being under indictment, Ron Disaster hasn't quit either, Pence literally just entered the race. As they say, it's anyone's game.

1chemistdown,

Pence will never get the nomination. Ever. Half his base hate him more than democrats.

Col3814444,

It wasn’t that long ago they were actively trying to hang him, seems hard to believe he could ever be their nominee

1chemistdown,
1chemistdown avatar

Right! If not Donald it will be desantis. The GQP love a great hateful guy with no plan other than beat someone down.

ngarjuna,
ngarjuna avatar

Per 538 there are 9 candidates in the race now:
Trump
Desantis
Haley
Scott
Christie
Pence
Burgum
Ramaswamy
and I’m forgetting someone

But the rules for who gets invited to debates is kind of strict (the polling requirements in particular) so it’s not totally clear who would be invited to a debate if one were being scheduled

Gargleblaster,

Asa Johnson or some such.

Asa Hutchinson. Used to be governor of Arkansas. Maybe he figures that governor magic will work for him like it worked for Slick Willy.

HandsHurtLoL,

I wonder if this pathetic lineup of grifters and self-promoting shysters will fragment the base so much that not a single one of them meets polling thresholds for debating!

FaceDeer,

And although Trump can be elected from behind bars, I see no reason why he would be allowed out of prison to do campaigning. So that might factor in to the debate roster as well.

Maybe he can answer debate questions from in one of those plexiglass booths with the telephone for visitation.

ParkingPsychology,

I assume he'll be able to stall the judicial process and if he ends up elected, he will pardon himself. Or that's what he's probably going for anyway.

RooPappy,

He's an overweight 78 year old man who has been taking bootleg sudafed and whatever his impostor doctors give him while telling him he's in great health, who is also under multiple lawsuits and indictments. I'd be shocked if he didn't just keel over from a stroke or heart issue in the next year or so. I'm not wishing for this to happen, but it just seems likely.

HakFoo,

Personally, I'd throw my vote behind Orville Reddenbacher. The amount of popcorn this primary season is going to sell should let him pull a fully-financed Mike Bloomberg expedition.

Gargleblaster,

Orville Reddenbacher is dead.
