The problem is most people get their news from fucking YouTube for some reason. Everyone at my work conservosphere gets their news from fucking YouTube or NewsMaxx

AbidanYre,

YouTube pushes hard right, too. It doesn’t even seem to matter what you watch, it’ll start heading in that direction super fast.

OsaErisXero,

The worst part is it's probably not even deliberate, just what drives the most eyeball time.

Jerkface,

They know it’s happening. They’re responsible for it. At this point I don’t see much of a difference if they intended this or not.

can,

Everyone says this and I’m sure it’s true but my anecdotal experience is that it knows I’m lefty and recommends me similar content as a result. Maybe it’s because I have autoplay off.

evidences,

This is my experience also, the algorithm is terrible at throwing my subscriptions into my recommended but I don’t think it ever throws right wing stuff in there.

Anamnesis,

Do you ever look at conservative stuff for fun? I watch a video of Jordan Peterson or something linked to from lefty reddit and boom, algorithm ruined.

subignition,
subignition avatar

You can remove specific videos from your watch history if something like this happens again.

DahGangalang,

So that’s what people keep telling me will happen, but I watched a More Perfect Union video once and now my recommendations are completely clogged with urban planning and union organization things (I’m primarily a watcher of edu-tainment things, e.g. sci show, CGP Grey, Knowing better, etc)

cyborganism,

Yeah I noticed that too. I was trying to find a video about the reality of trans youth lives with testimonies and such and all I could find were angry conservatives spewing hate about trans people

It’s the fucking algorithm. I’ve been active on YouTube since it started. I’ve had a Gmail account since it was in invite only beta. It’s safe to say they know all about my political leanings at this point. Yet, I still get hard right content in shorts all the fucking time no matter how much I block it, or dislike it. It’s crazy…

HopeOfTheGunblade,
HopeOfTheGunblade avatar

Dislikes are engagement, that fuels the algo to feed you more of it.

Feathercrown,

I’m convinced shorts just feeds you 80% random unrelated videos, the shorts algorithm is actually so garbage. It’a probably just that the creators making shorts are very skewed because they pump out hundreds vs others who make one to none a week.

Pronell,

Fuck, is that the problem, really?

I look for sources. If I can’t find a good one I look for multiple sources that are reporting the same story.

I’m not even THAT thorough or critical. We’re in deep trouble.

LittleTarsier,

Clearly you are thorough / critical though. People nowadays see something on Facebook or Youtube and just take it as fact.

Pronell,

Yeah, I’m old. And I read.

I avoid video sources in general too. Damnit.

Feathercrown,

As someone who considers myself pretty well-informed compared to the average American… I do not usually seek multiple sources. You’re in like the 0.1% of being well-informed, unfortunately.

Deceptichum,
@Deceptichum@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah they need to go back to getting their news from Fox or a Murdoch paper!

YT is not the problem, there is good quality reporting on YT, fuck almost far better than in traditional corporate owned traditional media.

The problem is right wing sources, be they paper, television, or online.

Grandwolf319,

How does that even work? Do they just go to YouTube, click on a random video and just assume it’s all true?

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Probably linked to Youtube from wingnut sites like beforeitsnews.com

Seriously… batshit crazy warning there…

Pyr_Pressure,

Yes

Grandwolf319,

Wow, that’s literally the equivalent of getting your news from people shouting in the streets.

cyborganism,

Yes!!!

An old friend of mine turned into an Andrew Tate fan because it YouTube algorithms. When I try to show him evidence of his wrongdoings I can barely find a fucking source in Google and YouTube. It’s maddening. It’s like being gaslit by the internet.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Sooo… the old people who didn’t die from Covid? Makes sense!

JohnyRocket,

I know this guy at work who in casual conversation said he doesn’t really follow any news. In another conversation he said he thinks trump should win because he would be the best for the economy and biden is tanking the economy… I tried to point out, that the economy wouldn’t matter all that much if the president is leaking the countries nuclear secrets to our enemies and doing project 2025 stuff, but he had no context and so he didn’t seem to believe me.

nutsack,

he’s also wrong

Cethin,

I would just tell him he has no idea about the health of the economy, or what either politician would do to help it, because he doesn’t watch news.

If you want to be proud of ignorance, I get to proudly not give your opinion any weight.

Feathercrown,

This tracks

rigatti,
@rigatti@lemmy.world avatar

Did they also people who follow non-digital websites?

Daxter101,

Please, do not the cat

Cort,

Kindly do the needful

oo1,

I get all my news from spiders.
Apparently there's a troubling fly shortage going on.
And the silk purists are trying to outlaw the use of carbon nanotubes.

elvith,

I prefer the good old analog websites over today’s digital websites!

neo,

The sound… I mean the text is just a bit warmer on analog sites.

Cethin,

Is that when your newspaper gets thrown through a spiderweb first?

ikidd,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

So, like 3 people.

Amoxtli,

They’re reading propaganda. This propaganda has made democrats callous and inhumane. The complicity and support for Israel in Gaza, the support of provocation, and antagonism. The democrat has fallen and he does not know it.

Feathercrown,

Most democratic policy is not foreign-focused.

Today,

If you try to read a transcript of a trump speech…

I feel bad for the people who have to add the punctuation.

BadmanDan,

Not surprised, the right are very effective at propaganda online. Also it dosen’t help that Biden is aiding a genocide

LopensLeftArm,
@LopensLeftArm@sh.itjust.works avatar

Also people who can read.

willow,

Could it be in part due to that (guess) newspapers tend to be more available and popular in cities?

GreatTitEnthusiast,

Yes and I assume people who read news papers tend to be more educated

Grandwolf319,

It’s also the thought process. Right wing views are mostly knee jerk reactions. Reactions that might be what I world think of at first as well. But left wing is more about breaking things down and realizing it’s more complicated.

banana_head,

I think that’s true of digital websites too. Us country folk just get the analog ones.

TokenBoomer,

TIL not all websites are digital, who knew?

artichokecustard,

we had to give up the real paper maybe 2 yrs back when the subscription went up to $24/mo, i don’t know who can afford it

oxjox,
@oxjox@lemmy.ml avatar

What’s the source of this poll?

cyborganism,

@Rimu

Please post source.

CapgrasDelusion,
Stiffneckedppl,

I prefer analog websites myself.

Fapper_McFapper,
