I'm a lawyer with a background in business! There are a lot of lawyers with interesting wetware since the initial filters on the profession are almost entirely test-based and the tests don't target things like emotional maturity, empathy, or interpersonal interactions.

neamhsplach,

I have a lot of lawyers in my social circle and this is definitely the case! I wonder if the "strong sense of justice" trait also attracts a lot of neurodivergent people to the industry initially.

I'm sure it differs from person to person, but a significant portion (possibly a majority) of the people at my law school seemed to be there because they didn't have any other ideas about what to do with their undergraduate degree. Easy access to ruinous student loan debt can seriously warp a person's decisionmaking process.

jmp242, in Reddit's r/sysadmin mods have chosen NOT to participate in the blackout

Honestly, I've been saying I'll still be on reddit for the sysadmin sub for work, at least as long as old.reddit.com exists cause I'm at a PC when I'm working. But I looked at the sub today and realized - like with /r/news ... there's way less posts and content than there used to be.

And what is posted there is low interest. Also, IDK if I've "leveled up" (like 7 years ago TBH), but my problems I'd be pushed to post about usually fly completely over the heads of most other posters on that sub. So it's not even valuable to me in solving problems unless I happen to hit on like 3 other posters who are actually as or more experienced as I am. Otherwise I get silence or "generic responses" I already know that isn't actually helpful.

So... I'm starting to think I won't miss much from that sub either. And I already had other time wasters.

I hope we get some more users on here, and people who are higher skilled (is the fediverse a "you must be this techie to ask questions filter?).

dustojnikhummer,

Most /r/sysadmin posts are "I don't like my management, should I quit" or "how do I make my user's work life even more miserable"

agreenbhm, (edited )

Used to love that sub but the top posts too often are people bitching about work or non-technical discussions. Rarely read anything there anymore.

Senseibull,

I use ChatGPT premium GPT-4 connected to bing, almost exclusively in place now, obviously there is no community discussion but the answer I can get out of it have helped me quite a bit, and I’m an engineering manager

jmp242,

Can you explain - is this using Bing, or is there some setting in ChatGPT premium I'm unaware of? I am planning to try https://labs.kagi.com/fastgpt some also, but it's not the same exactly.

Senseibull,

Premium subscribers for ChatGPT now have GPT-4 that can search the web, I find it really good and more accurate than it was previously, I just used it to write a whole load of technical documentation for me on a niche application I use in work. I gave it a template layout I wanted and asked it to write the document, previously it was hallucinating incorrect paragraphs on how to use the the product as it didn’t have up to date data, now it does as it performs a web function.

I don’t like Bing really, the answers are too brief.

To add, I’m in the UK so the feature may be geographical right now. You can see it in a drop down box when you choose GPT-4 towards the top of the screen.

geon, in a more formal beehaw introduction thread

i’m late to the party but i thought i could join and introduce myself as well.

hello, i’m user geon and i’m 17 years old. i enjoy watching movies and shows, and i recently finished binging american horror story. my favourite actors at the moment are mads mikkelsen, charles boyer, jack nicholson, and javier bardem. my favourite movies of all time are the shawshank redemption, the pianist, and gaslight (1944). i enjoy old films as well, typically those from the 30s-40s. my watchlist at the moment is… incredibly long, but i hope to finish some movies this summer.

i plan on studying programming (will study c# next semester, maybe python next year), and hopefully get a job within data/it. i want to become a digital nomad and travel the world when i get older… i want to visit svalbard and siberia the most right now. my favourite animal is the capybara. i listen to a plethora of artists and groups, ranging from classical music to thrash metal. i like music from the late 2000s/early 2010s since those years are nostalgic to me. i have a thing for 70s-80s music right now though.

i used to be incredibly immersed in politics and the study of political ideologies. i still find it interesting, and i also enjoy speaking to people whose opinions differ from mine… i like getting new perspectives. i also enjoy philosophical discussions, even though i’m already quite secure in my viewpoints.

sorry for the ramble… i realise i’m on the younger side of lemmy users but i hope to engage in meaningful discussions on here with y’all. i’m happy to be here. (:

markipol, in Introductions

Hi everyone this is my first comment here despite being here for a few days and trying to use it more, slowly weaning myself off Reddit (no idea if I'm gonna be able to do it long term). I was diagnosed with Asperger's as a teenager, but I was in denial for a very long time because I didn't like the psychologist diagnosing me. I don't like the term anymore because the doctor was a Nazi. Rather just saw ASD level 1. Recently I've been realising I have ADHD and I think that causes me more problems in my life than ASD. I can't afford to get diagnosed or medicated currently however :/

that_funny_feeling, in Tell me about your work life!

I have an undergraduate degree in computer science but currently work in marketing. I hate it most days, because it doesn’t align with my values. I hate that my job consists of increasing profits for bullshit companies, and I have no say in which clients we take on.

My day to day consists of getting tasks, feeling overwhelmed and do anything but work. I browse reddit(rip), get coffee, use the toilet, pretend I’m busy most of the day. Then I get a rush of productivity and do what I actually have to do reasonably quickly. It’s either random or I get pressured by deadlines.

Every day is a countdown until I can get home, and then realise I have to do it again tomorrow.

I'm here from reddit, where I was hitting a good flow with moderating r/edc. I need more time to get up to speed on how lemmy works before I'm ready to try it here unless you get desperate lol.

Thanks all.

Elaine Kew (K.E.W.) was a royal pain in the ass. She was a former actress in NYC back in the day, a teacher (tutored our children) who was diagnosed with MS 25-30 years ago.
We met and somehow put up with her shenanigans.
She smoked weed, and liked to get drunk on our terrace so they had to call the firemen to come assist her back into her chair. I was not allowed to help, and actually told to leave...since, apparently, my ass didn't rate up there with the young firemen.

I got a promotion & relocation with the company I was working for, so for a few years we were not in the same (US) state, but kept in touch.

After we moved to Spain, she decided enough was enough & joined us (our oldest son flew back to help her pack, get her shit together & sell her condo.

Ever independent, she has her own flat with a view of the Med. & mountain.

We are going to take her ashes to Finland next year, (her parents were born there), go to the mountain she used to ski and (if allowed) spread her ashes with some food grade glitter (her last, most fabulous act).

She was a royal pain in the ass.

She will be greatly missed.
