Is there a #Covid expert in the room?
My workplace has this rule for coming back to work after a Covid-positive test:

1- isolate for 5 days,
2- wear a mask for 5 days,
3- then do whatever you want.

They don’t require a negative test to come back.
Are we not contagious as long as the test is positive?🤔

@elduvelle
inadequate for sure. we used a rule at my coop where you had to have 2 negative antigen tests on 2 consecutive days after an infection, and even then most people would still mask up (gotta be sealed k/n95) afterwards. it's the testing not the time period that matters, but bureaucracies are designed to merely appear as if they are doing something.

highly recommend getting a HEPA air filter or three for your workspace

shawrd773,

@elduvelle If PCR test, unclear, because they can detect very small amounts. If positive rapid test, you probably do have an infectious viral load.

They’re probably following the inadequate CDC recommendations on this.

@elduvelle No, a positive test has no relation to the contagiousness of the patient.

It is pointless to ask for a negative test to come back to work. However, you need 8 days and not 5.

@neurologo interesting! Could you explain more why the test results and contagiousness are unrelated?
Do you know how one could test for contagiousness?

neurologo,
@neurologo@mastodon.cloud avatar

@elduvelle Both the PCR & the rapid antigen tests have at best 75% of sensitivity and about 60% of specificity, depending on the day they are taken (relative to the start of symptoms, max in day 3-5, then it falls). This means lots of false negatives and false positives after 6-7 days.

We now know a patient is contagious from 2 days BEFORE the start of symptoms to day 8. That’s it. No less, no more. (Obviously, much less contagious the last days).

So and ventilate.

@neurologo “no more, no less” really? Aren’t these numbers (from -2 to +8) an average? And doesn’t it depend on the variant?
What if you still have symptoms after day 8, and still test “very” positive on a rapid test?
(Thanks for answering :) )

neurologo,
@neurologo@mastodon.cloud avatar

@elduvelle Really. It’s not an average, there hasn’t been any documented transmisión before day -2 and after day 8. The rate of contagiousness drops dramatically after day 6 and after day 8 is neglectible, it falls to 0 at day 10 (at the beginning we thought it was 14 days).

No variant known to date has changed this, we don’t know about the new ones.

There might be symptoms for months/years (long COVID) and genetic code of the virus in the body, but it is not contagious.

@neurologo oh that’s very interesting- thanks!!
If you had some studies that I could cite when people ask about this it would be great!

maggiemaybe,

@elduvelle that is correct, but the airlines cried to Biden so that skank Rochelle changed it to five days. Yes people are still contagious, no nobody has to test before coming back to work. Because Biden puts profit over people.

maggiemaybe,

@elduvelle oh and also to make sure that the mask really is a scarlet letter. I’m OK with people thinking I have Covid when I wear a mask in the grocery store, hopefully they stay far away from me. But I could see how it would interfere with weak adults and teenagers, they would rather risk their lives and have people look at them funny.

@maggiemaybe everyone should just wear a mask until the pandemic is over really 🤷
