"I love using your free Mac software and want to use it on iOS but I can't afford it. Could I get a free copy? Thanks!"

Fires up ChatGPT...

eumrz,

@gedeonm well, that just prompted me to purchase the iOS app, so you got one new costumer. I’ve been using the Mac app for a while so I thought it was the right time.

@eumrz Appreciate that so much, thank you!

sean,

@gedeonm @chockenberry I have always wondered why the Mac version is free. I’d understand paid everywhere, free everywhere, or even—given that Mac software seems to still be valued more—a paid Mac app and a free iOS/watch companion app. This model always struck me as strange, but I’m sure it was a considered decision. So I’m curious why you went that way? (Signed, a happy customer on all platforms)

@sean @chockenberry Craig will have to confirm or deny what I’m about to say but I think it was kind of an experiment. We knew that the Mac app would be the most valuable one and so Craig wanted to give that one away for free. And then if people found it extremely useful, they would want to take it with them, and hence pay for the iOS version. It’s definitely different from most pay models for this kind of software, but it has worked.

@gedeonm @sean Yep, and Tot also isn't valuable until you have a lot of content collected and realize you need it on another platform. Making the Mac app free was the obvious choice there.

Another factor: we were just starting on a year long project to make Frenzic and none of us had time for any fancier payment/subscription implementations.

@gedeonm I don't understand the praise for this. That response is lifeless corporate boilerplate

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

@tomw If I had to guess it has something to do with the nature of the request being made. If it wasn’t a disrespectful play to receive something valuable that people spent many many hours crafting for absolutely nothing then I would be happy to respond in person (as I always have in over 25 years in business). But your milage may vary. 🤷‍♂️

@gedeonm OK, but what problem does the AI solve here? Being faux polite to someone for you? Why not just tell them to get lost?

gedeonm,
@gedeonm@mastodon.social avatar

@tomw it solves me having to spend more than 10 minutes of time trying to craft the perfect, polite and emotionally taxing reply. Note that last part especially. It also helps keep me from lashing out, which believe me, I very badly want to do.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm But if your answer is "no", you are surely under no obligation to be perfect, polite or emotionally taxed. Or even to reply.

jefflewis,

@gedeonm Intercom I think has an in-chat tool that does something like this! These use cases really make sense for generative AI.

    @esamecar Right? I think that’s the problem actually. 🤣

    @gedeonm @chockenberry It’s good reply and a fine example of the difference between artificial and human intelligence. A person with experience would likely omit that last sentence.

    @drdrang @chockenberry Oh, I plan to! 😄
