Why is it so complicated to run a local web server for development that uses subdomains and SSL? I’m drowning in docker, nginx, puma, and rails. It seems like this should be so simple with just a few config files, and yet… 😭

My talk on “Swift Godot: Fixing the Multi-million dollar mistake” has been posted: https://streaming.media.ccc.de/godotcon2023/relive/57866

@Migueldeicaza This was a great talk! Really good job at making a really complex topic aimed at a such a varied audience still make a lot of sense. I’ve never been as interested in game dev as I have watching your SwiftGodot work expand!

I always have had BBEdit running, but now I'm totally in on it for general coding. I haven't opened VSCode or RubyMine for a couple of days and pretty quickly forgot about the features I was missing. I really just want something fast and Macintosh native.

jefflewis,
@jefflewis@hachyderm.io avatar

@collin For JS/TS projects “auto import” and type annotations are my “must have” features. For my Ruby projects, I very much enjoy having rubocop/solargraph warnings and find Nova to be great for both.

I’m curious what about BBEdit you still enjoy over Nova.

This tvOS update seems like a good one. The new Control Center UI is growing on me, and I like how easy it is to get to your home stuff.

Too bad the quality of third party apps tend to be pretty low. I think Apple's own TV app, while not perfect, is by far the best.

I'm sorry to anyone who works on it, and I'm sure it's not your fault, but YouTube, the app I use the most, is absolutely terrible.

jefflewis,
@jefflewis@hachyderm.io avatar

@collin What really gets me is users of each platform aren’t skipping back and forth between platforms. A YouTube Apple TV user is not going to be using your Roku app in 10 minutes. (I mean, yea this will happen, but it’s not how most will use your apps).

The story of why Elon Musk fired most of the election integrity team after saying he would expand it is stupider than I even imagined. The team's manager liked a tweet calling Elon a dipshit.

Having a hard time with #GitHub’s MacOS runners for actions.

They seem to have poor CPU slicing/allocation, and they’re charging 10x the Linux price. Pretty rough paying 10x for something to run so artificially slow (runs very fast on my local MacBook Pro; sometimes it takes 30+ minutes for the iPhone Simulator to start up on the GH runner). Is this just Azure not being very good?

Anyone else experiencing this? Got any tips (short of: manage your own runners elsewhere)?

jefflewis,
@jefflewis@hachyderm.io avatar

@sean the macOS 13 runners (still beta :/) are significantly better. I have a RN app that takes ~30 minutes on the macOS 12 runner that is ~20 minutes on the macOS 13 runner.

@ivory For the mac app... I resize the window to be full height on my laptop. When I close the window and later click the dock icon to re-open, the window is shorter. Is this a known thing?

jefflewis,

@ivory The worst offense is gone in that the window doesn't keep getting smaller, but I still notice the window gets moved without me moving it.

Still bummed that Deliveries got discontinued. The FedEx app is truly awful. UPS is less worse but still pretty janky.

jefflewis,

@paul I'm working on one that will let you do label tracking like delivers or Parcel, but also let you use EasyPost to buy postage at reduced rates.

Exciting news, looks like 2023 is finally going to be the year of ... ... a real Thunderbolt KVM. Not many details but looks like MSRP is $300, has 4 USB-A ports and 60W power delivery.
