I just lost power at my house again.

I'm beginning to think I should go all in and not just install grid tie solar but local storage. I've lost power at least 6 times this year already

@kwf the fellow at https://blog.networkprofile.org did some nice write ups about their solar+generator setup that might give you some inspiration

graham,

@kwf I still have plans to do a hybrid install. Both grid tie when grid available and batteries when grid goes down.

@kwf Do you have NEM 2.0 or 3.0? If your install is under 3.0 then getting storage is almost the only way to get your solar install to pay off, since export is worth very little. Of course, then you also get backup.

I work for a company that makes smart panels so you can reconfigure your critical loads on the fly during an outage.

clinstid,

@kwf we're getting grid tied solar installed in a couple of months but we opted for a propane generator rather than local storage. We occasionally lose power for 3+ days and the battery cost to cover that was just too high. We don't get enough sunlight in the New Hampshire forest to be able to recharge batteries fast enough. ☹️

@clinstid very reasonable. Our power losses are 2-8 hours and usually in the afternoon

clinstid,

@kwf sweet, that will work perfectly for you. We made sure the system we're installing can add batteries later. Hopefully battery tech will continue to get better and prices will come down in a few years.

@kwf I see no possible way this could turn into a gigantic rabbit hole. :D

@talldarknweirdo looks back up from the bottom of a rabbit hole

Yeah. Sounds like it.

@kwf @talldarknweirdo but the learnings! I will have sooooooo many questions!

@kwf @talldarknweirdo clears throat But Kenneth, that’ll be difficult! You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into. That’s something best left to the experts.

Did it work? Again?

@smitty @talldarknweirdo turns out, running an ASN is one of the easier parts Smitty.

@talldarknweirdo @kwf I applaud your ability to Yes-And any challenge.

@talldarknweirdo @kwf said rabbit holes will eventually form a network. Said network will talk bgp at some point.

@baloo @talldarknweirdo I've already fallen for that one. Pick a new industry.

An hour into the power outage, I cobbled the partner a battery powered fan.

12V fan, screwed into a 2.1mmx5.5mm barrel to screw terminal adapter. That's plugged into a knockoff DCB090 adapter which takes DeWalt batteries and spits out 12V as well as USB-A and USB-C ports.

The dewalt batteries are charged from 12V off solar in my tool closet, so I can at least keep this running for a while... 🤓

This is my focusing on the enjoyable little wins in literally the worst timeline.
