When I see the CAISO solar supply THAT flat topped, it makes me suspect that there's a TON of additional solar capacity that is getting curtailed because there simply isn't anywhere to send it.
Signs continue to indicate that this is going to be an extremely interesting summer for California's transition to renewable energy.
@foone We need a completely round browser with tabs all the way around the circumference. 90's-2000's media app devs just got out of their rocking chair
The other day while I was riding my bike, a guy ran a stop sign in a truck and I had to move to avoid getting hit.
Not an atypical experience.
But what was unusual was that I ran into him in person today and he said sorry. I didn't know who he was, but he came up to me and explained that he was the driver from the other day and that he wanted to apologize for the incident. Pretty nice guy.
@MLE_online My drivers always cuss me out for existing I guess. The only time they’ve interacted with me is to threaten my life a second time. Glad to hear not all near-death experiences are from rage, there’s still a chance that if we die on these streets the inattentive driver will be really sad.
In one of the more ridiculous moments of my life so far, I got asked to quickly run and buy snacks for the actors right before today's matinee show at the theater.
We were a half hour from show time, so I was already in my maid costume and didn't have time to change, drive to the market and shop, drive back, and get back into costume.
So I had to go to the store dressed as a maid. Fortunately I had my giant coat to mostly cover up how silly I looked.
@Niall@tubetime Renesas is not known for good UX and a CAD program is 100% UX (since one could technically type out some raw gerber files). Also it was a unanimous board decision on both companies, which is rarely a good sign.
Despite working in the electronics field, I never really got into #smarthome stuff. But lately I have been trying out #homeassistant and was excited that a friend from Chicago Meetups, @kbx81, has been working at #NabuCasa on the #esphome project.
I spoke with Keith about how to get started as a beginner in the field, but then also how to put some custom electronics to work in a #homeautomation context. I was impressed with how fast I could add a #zigbee device to my HA
Pro tip, don’t use a Pi or any dedicated small ARM thing to run it. Don’t use Docker or supervised install. Get a tiny refurb PC like a ThinkCentre M720 and install proxmox, then HAOS in a VM. Much better experience and you can use the same box for a few other local things.
Sometimes it’s the little things that make you respect a manufacturer. I use Coway air filters, which at first-plus-n glances seems like a random Amazon brown-box-serif-font brand. However, they save the most recent operation mode to EEPROM to preserve it across a power cycle, meaning that automating the devices with a smart outlet was trivial.
In which GrowSF PAC leader and mega-donor to my opponent calls for the death of me and my colleagues. Can we finally stop calling these toxic millionaires who spread disinformation and incite violence against political opponents “moderates”?
@deanpreston It’s a good thing Garry wasn’t elected to do anything and his wildly unacceptable behavior will probably only have negative consequences for himself rather than impact all 800,000 people who struggle to live and work in San Francisco.
My solar system has been fully commissioned, and generated 6kWh on its first full day.
The array has shading in the winter, so the 3kW of solar won't really reach its full potential until spring. Until then, I do at least have full battery backup for all the power outages we have out here.
@kwf@M0YNG That's the EV rate, right? Exporting to grid off-peak is still somewhat lucrative under NEM 3 if you feel comfortable draining your batteries to deliver night-time solar
@timonsku Are you using it for high level stuff like RTOS task debugging etc? I generally do lower level stuff with OpenOCD & pyocd found the originals of these were unsatisfactory so I mostly use ST-Link isolated version.
Today a friend and I went to the swap meet and I bought a bunch of random VHS tapes, including one that was an amateur video from the 1989 Renaissance faire here in LA.
It was just a couple of young doofuses walking around the fair, interviewing people and being awkward and horny.
BUT they interviewed one girl with whom they exchanged numbers. Using those names and numbers, my friend and I spent the afternoon tracking these people down and finding social media accounts and phone numbers for them. We messaged and called them. I hope we hear back.
One of the best part of looking through ewaste recyclers in the bay area is how often you find stuff labeled "COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL, NOT FOR RESALE, DESTROY AFTER 01/01/2017"
Today's winner was a bunch of Netflix prototype hardware in plexiglass
@foone Do most ewaste recyclers let you rummage through the stuff? The ones I've been to have big signs saying not to. Seems like might expect this stuff to be destroyed rather than floating around in public. My company sends stuff to ewaste that has experienced short-circuit testing and is not safe to install in a home electrical system anymore, but outwardly appears fine.
My vegan daughter (as opposed to my non-vegan daughter) came over and we attempted to alter my cookie recipe to make vegan cookies. We used olive oil instead of butter (which I do anyway) and a “flax egg” and while they don’t look beautiful the taste is excellent!
(The one caveat is that they needed to fully cool. Fresh from the oven is not the right time to eat them.)
This is an extra day on the beginning of #Supercon where a bunch of us degenerates ride the #11 Coast Starlight down to LA instead of flying. I get on in San Jose, but others got on in Oakland, as well as a big group last year who got on in Portland the day before and got an EVEN EXTRA 24 hours of hacking on a train.
This is an informal event, so you just need to make sure you end up on the right train, which is the #11 southbound arriving at LA Union Station on Thursday night, 11/2. The train arrives in LA around 9-10PM, in time for either a late dinner or going straight to your hotels.
Last year I recommended business class since that would ensure that we all ended up in the same car and had access to the diner car, but due to current equipment shortages Business Class is unavailable, so I'm getting a coach ticket. We spent essentially the whole day last year hanging out in the lounge car, so coach vs private room class doesn't matter. I'd recommend packing your own meals if you're in coach, since the diner car only offers meals to coach as capacity allows, and none of the food options on the train are very good. I usually pick up a Subway sandwich on the way to the train station.
@kwf Do you have NEM 2.0 or 3.0? If your install is under 3.0 then getting storage is almost the only way to get your solar install to pay off, since export is worth very little. Of course, then you also get backup.
I work for a company that makes smart panels so you can reconfigure your critical loads on the fly during an outage.
