A lot of businesses switched to Facebook as their “webpage” over the years and I feel that will be a problem for them in the long run. Discord communities moving from self hosted forums to discord is going to be the same eventually. Will be way harder to move them back to other stuff. Keeping both is always better.
@djlink I really don't understand why so many people are putting stuff onto Discord. It just seems a real bad system for anything that resembles a forum - it doesn't show up in search, and anything other than the most recent few comments are effectively lost.
That prevents it from ever building up a useful repository of knowledge.
@djlink I've always thought that too. I never used Facebook, don't even have an account, I won't use something that could be a simple hosted page anywhere. It's a usage "tax" too high to pay.
@djlink It also alienates those of us without a FB account. I haven't looked at anything on that platform ever. If your main "website" is FB, I don't know you exist.
@djlink What is the go to for this? I completely agree with you but i can't help but feel they are making the "right decision" in that discord is making it 100x easy to lock in with them. If I look up selfhost forums there are 100s of forum softwares but these aren't services i can signup and bam i have my forum.
@djlink Yeah last time i used a forum it was simple machines forums lmao. I feel like the thing is discord is just a service that immediately works. I have even been using discords forum channels but i do still agree it would be better to have my own forum for things related to my games.
@djlink Nothing worse than looking up a restaurant, clicking the link for their “website”, and being sent to Facebook. Some places you can’t even find a dang menu outside of their Facebook page, or even see the menu on Facebook without an account that I am not going to make.
