DemocracySpot,
@DemocracySpot@mstdn.social avatar

@kathimmel

Is that the one with no Rs?

kathimmel,
@kathimmel@mstdn.social avatar

@DemocracySpot it's like this (without the youth slang embellishments). :D

@kathimmel

Thanks for the first laugh of the day. 🙂

kathimmel,
@kathimmel@mstdn.social avatar

@DemocracySpot i shall consider that an honorific & shit.

@kathimmel

Yes, of course. I'm not sure what the working-class, 1960s small-village accent was, but that and my nanny's cockney accent were the first British accents I heard.

kathimmel,
@kathimmel@mstdn.social avatar

@DemocracySpot depends on the village, i suppose. :) your nan was a cockney? did she teach you all the lingo?

DemocracySpot,
@DemocracySpot@mstdn.social avatar

@kathimmel

The "village" near Mildenhall was a cul-de-sac with a factory at the top. Dad was USAF. Both my Nan's are American; Jessie, was my "nanny"—day-sitter while Mom was pregnant and after, 59-60. East Ender, WWII widow. She sold everything and moved near the RAF base. A large caravan with sunflowers all around. She taught me some rhyming slang + took me around the shops to perform for the laughs, the little American kid. Back in the US at 5 w/ a British accent + cockney at will.

@kathimmel

Some of this I remember, most of it Mom told me.

kathimmel,
@kathimmel@mstdn.social avatar

@DemocracySpot o! mea culpa. apologies for confusing 'nanny' with nan.
jessie sounds ace - & that's brilliant that your young brain absorbed so much of her influence.

DemocracySpot,

@kathimmel

I was the "troubled" child, and her mission. Mom said. My avatar was taken then. Jessie would *not allow Dad to take her picture so we have only memories of her. Her hubs was a butcher, a volunteer firefighter killed in the Blitz. He was Irish. Very few memories, but good ones.

@DemocracySpot i'm so pleased you had a positive presence early on in your life. you appear to be quite content in your avi photo. i hope that was the case. x

@kathimmel

Mom said I was quite happy and resilient, but also a hellion.

"Hellion" just asked a lot of questions. II questioned everything. BTW. Mom was cool with lil' Cockney-accented me, but Dad wouldn't stand for it; also made me start saying "Mom" instead of Mum back in the US. "No kid of mine..." prick, he was. :-)

kathimmel,
@kathimmel@mstdn.social avatar

@DemocracySpot genius. :) i'm sure your 'hellion' side was aimed at the right targets.

I was giving it a wee thought as I listened to the narration. One of my favorite parts of the Scottish accent is the pronunciation of the double – "o." While both British and American English- accented speakers pronounce the word "good" (rhymes with "would"), a Scottish- accented speaker, says "goo" with a "d" at the end. ❤️

kathimmel,
@kathimmel@mstdn.social avatar

@DemocracySpot nice observation - especially about 'good', which is 'guid' in scots.

@DemocracySpot@mstdn.social avatar

@kathimmel

Exactly. Thank you! Not so great with phonetics. That's perfect.

kathimmel,
@kathimmel@mstdn.social avatar

@DemocracySpot it is perfect. scots is a fascinating language. i really should apply myself to learning more of it, as i've spent more of my life downstairs (england), thus far (much to my chagrin).

DemocracySpot,
@DemocracySpot@mstdn.social avatar

@kathimmel

And of course I hesitated to use Scots but knew it wasn't Scotch.

kathimmel,
@kathimmel@mstdn.social avatar

@DemocracySpot very good. scotch is a drink, not a people or language. :)
