Very much thinking of Phil Zimmermann who fought previous battles in the 90s and won, just to see it comeback every few years in another form.

"The statement is set to outline that Ofcom, the tech regulator, will only require companies to scan their networks when a technology is developed that is capable of doing so, according to people briefed on the plan."

People are saying they dropped the clause on requiring scanning. That’s not the read I have which is more concerning.

They are passing a legal basis now for it and are handing the judgement over to Ofcom for “when it is feasible” to do so. Which is much more dangerous because now implementing this will be in the hands of the executive branch who can change their mind at any point in time and pressure encryption providers separately.

womble,

@fj glad I'm not the only one who thought this wasn't the unqualified win for the pro-encryption crowd. The sensible option would be to pass the legislation after it's deemed feasible to do whatever they want to do, not front-load it like this.

And so does the interpretation of the UK Gov …
"If there was a situation where the mitigations that the social media providers are taking are not enough, and if after further work with the regulator they still can't demonstrate that they can meet the requirements within the bill, then the conversation around encryption takes place"

She said further work to develop the technology was needed, but added that government-funded research had shown it was possible.

@fj Every policy mooted by our present Government (comprised of the most enthusiastic and therefore misguided Brexiters) is done for optics - begging votes from their equally-ignorant voter-base. From fantasy unbuildable bridges to electronic borders, to this bill, they have no idea how the real world works. Their policies are disjointed & random. They are burned out, & desperate. They know they will be ejected next year. They leave an almighty mess behind them, after 13 yrs of folly & corruption
