Also potatoes when they do rot smell like absolute death

And if you see one like this don't eat it, it's probably relatively green and could make you seriously ill or worse to eat it, not because it's rotting though, but because of toxins!

Basically if it's green, skip it, if it's pale green only in the skin you might be ok if you peel it, but if the actual flesh is green toss it. Don't risk it.

@KayOhtie potatoes are overrated imo;

  • without a lot of help the flavour is just meh
  • not exactly healthy
  • horribly difficult to store (I am comparing this to rice, that requires a large, dry, bin and that’s it: happily sits there doing nothing for years)
  • reminds me of grandparents

@evi russets are overrated, Yukon Gold are pretty tasty with just salt and a basic fat of some kind, no different than any other basic ingredient really benefits from on its own. Less aromatic than some riced but definitely more than basic long grain white rice, though pricier, but I dunno, they good~

@KayOhtie we get types like Bildtstar, Bintje, Junior and Opperdoez, so I can’t really have an opinion on things like Yukon. They’re all fine fried, but even that gets old rather quickly and stuff like mashed is very unhealthy and only nice because of all the not-potato to be honest.

I don’t buy basic rice, and most certainly not the still way too popular instant or even microwave paste they dare call rice. I go to the Asian store and get one or two 24kg bags of Basmati or better (and pay less than at the supermarket for basic).

@carl @KayOhtie good: the potato in and of itself is pretty rich in a few vitamins and the fibre content isn’t too bad (note that most of that is in the skin).

They are obviously high in carb, specifically they are high GI and very high GL. Both I would classify as “not great”.

A last bit is personal: I am flat out bored of boiled potatoes and would much prefer a grain, rice or beans. All offer more or less starches, but with better fiber and protein balance.

Side note: the Dutch food agency doesn’t classify potatoes as a vegetable (puts them in with bread and grains).

@carl @KayOhtie hope that clarifies what I meant. I was not trying to make a blanket statement of “potatoes bad”, but they are less healthy than a classification of “vegetables” would lead a lot of people to believe.

However, let us look into GL and GI since carbs by themselves are not a bad thing. Rice has higher GL and GI. You just don't like potatoes. Which is completely OK. The problem is, you try to use pseudo science to justify your personal likes and dislikes. Stop that.

@carl @KayOhtie sorry if that was the impression you got as that was certainly not what I was going for. You’re totally correct that cabs are not bad in or of themselves.

I did pick our rice specifically for flavour and considerably lower GL, but without stating such, you have no way of knowing that.
