No shit, Sherlock.

“Fully remote workers could produce less than half the climate-warming emissions of people who spend their days in offices, according to a new study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.”

“Working from home now has another powerful benefit”

@drahardja I feel you. I've been saying this exact thing for over a year— where's my invite to the National Academy of Sciences? lol

jws,

@drahardja But how is heating/cooling one space more efficient than heating/cooling two spaces? This does not compute /s

veirling,

@drahardja Right? FFS, the sense of childlike wonderment (touched with skepticism, because Bezo media project) that by gosh golly we could actually produce less carbon by driving less!
wapo -> 🤡

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@veirling I mean, kudos to WaPo for publishing this study instead of the usual pro-corporate drivel.

veirling,

@drahardja Hard yes, and I should be grateful (for real) that, beyond all hope, this somehow managed to get past the editors. Hope to see more of this.

@drahardja Also, it is a shame that so many people live so far from work. Perhaps that should be subsidized. Goal: Everyone can walk or bike to work.

@drahardja I just had a fully tenured biologist yesterday rant at me for 15 minutes about the fossil fuels industry and emissions. About how the world is on fire. I joked that what he's saying is that he should support my hybrid work plan when I talk to my boss. He thought a moment and said "maybe next year when you've put in some time. You're still really on probation" The cognitive dissonance of baby boomers is astounding. I'm 41 with a master's degree. I think I can handle it...

@drahardja

Turn offices into housing and bring the cost of living down.

condalmo,
@condalmo@mstdn.social avatar

@drahardja This is exactly where Big Oil companies would like us to focus our attention.

Catawu,
@Catawu@mastodon.social avatar

@drahardja And after we solve the housing crisis by converting those office buildings into residences & small businesses, not only will the price of owning a home (or renting) fall dramatically, but so will car insurance because we don’t have to drive 2-4 hrs a day to get to-from work. But How DARE we think technology should make our life better, eh? How dare we use it for ourselves! Sherlock is in for a rude awakening.

@drahardja coming up on 7 years fully remote. Trying to imagine the gallons of gasoline saved.

nic,
@nic@toot.wales avatar

@drahardja @josh I teach Welsh to adults. A face-to-face class in town involves 7-15 people travelling 6-40 miles, most of them by car. I worked that one of my classes was the equivalent of a 300-mile car journey.

nic,
@nic@toot.wales avatar

@drahardja @josh When we were forced online, most of those journeys disappeared (some people combined the class with their weekly shop, so still drove to town, I suppose)

@drahardja yes but the parasites need their commercial real estate income

voron,
@voron@mstdn.party avatar

@drahardja but, but, but think of all the super rich people who own commercial real estate!!!!
😥😓

@drahardja I'm sure this has been found and reported many times. Do you have more peer-reviewed articles to share?

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@rgarcia I don’t, but it’s such an obvious idea…

Actually, here’s a paper (not sure of its peer review status) that suggests that there is a measurable drop in CO₂ emissions during lockdowns. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8445775/

MaybeMyMonkeys,

@drahardja don’t think the purveyors/shareholders of car manufacturers, gas stations, coffee shops, cubicle farms and tax collectors are gonna tolerate that

tasket,
@tasket@mastodon.social avatar

@drahardja "Now"?

Telecommuting used to be promoted as low emissions.

breadbin,
@breadbin@bitbang.social avatar

@drahardja Also less wear and tear on roads, more local commerce, etc.

Should give people a tax credit for working from home, and give companies a tax credit per person working from home.

gglockner,
@gglockner@social.seattle.wa.us avatar

@drahardja I read the article. Seems like the biggest win is that if nobody is in the office, then you don't need HVAC. The moment people come to the office even once per week, you need HVAC. Commuting was not as big of a win as I expected, though it scaled proportionate to the number of days in the office.

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@gglockner Also less tire and brake dust, less congestion, less road wear, etc.
