"Manoeuvre" is officially my least favourite word to spell. (The American spelling ain't too bad, the Canadian spelling is atrocious).

Oh wait, it gets worse: "manoeuvrable"

aaaaggghhhh

vonxylofon,
@vonxylofon@witter.cz avatar

@sundogplanets Manœuvrable if you're feeling fancy.

@sundogplanets
Go for the original (french) word you can't go wrong. The maneuver spelling isn't anywhere near how it's pronounced.

@sundogplanets My least favourite word to spell would be Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism

@sundogplanets I love how spelling exists in an inconsistent world with one foot in English English and the other in American.
The sign outside that reads "Tire Centre" is my favourite example.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@sundogplanets you can thank french for that :) manœuvre and manœuvrable if you want to be fancy. It make some sense if you split œuvre (work? as a noun), from it, but yeah, must be confusing for an engilsh speaker.

@sundogplanets Now I need to listen to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (O.M.D.)

@sundogplanets my masters thesis was full of this, also “manoeuvring”. That was a fun programme!

"It's more of a maneuver."😄:blobangel:

EDIT: Dang I messed up that quote.. I guess this has been more of a gesture after all :-D

@sundogplanets yeah I know I get lost in manoeuvres all the time

I just wrote "Near Earth Asteroids" as "Nearth Asteroids" and I think I may have to try to convince people that's a real thing as my own private joke.

(Can you tell I'm frantically writing articles and starting to run out of steam?)

dx,
@dx@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@sundogplanets “Nearthers” or “neartheroids” for short

mkj,

@sundogplanets As long as you don't shorten it further to "Nerf asteroids".

michael_w_busch,
@michael_w_busch@mastodon.online avatar

@sundogplanets I parsed that as "N-Earth Asteroids" and am now trying to understand what that would mean.

I'm writing up answers to questions from a reporter about satellite pollution, and my answers are getting spicier and spicier as I go...I think I'll have to go for a walk and come back to this to make sure I'm not raging too much at whoever the audience is for this piece...

whitemice,
@whitemice@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets Glad I'm not the only one who experiences this. I usually write a long hot article, sleep on it, edit it to be shorter and cooler, go for a walk, edit it to be shorter and cooler, then post.

IanAMartin,
@IanAMartin@mstdn.ca avatar

@sundogplanets I have occasionally seen it in early-20thC English novels as ‘manœvre’ if you want to make things worse for yourself.

I like to tease the Brits, that despite their love/hate relationship with the French, they've retained what I would call "French spelling", and Americans beat them to better-spelled words.

E.g.: COLOUR, the U is atavistic and needless.

So you're actually complaining about that, "Frenchisms" left in British spelling.

What do you want from a people who call it

Aluminium

rather than

Aluminum

{laughs}

Like any of it matters, at the end of the day. Except "manoeuvre", kill it the moment you see it.

😆

mkj,

@sundogplanets There are a few words where I just type something mostly correct and then use the spell checker...

Yes, I could pull out the dictionary, or the thesaurus (is there another word for that? 😉), or the encyclopedia, and look up the spelling. But I'll admit, if spell checking is available, that's often more convenient. 🙂

@sundogplanets Is the canadian version the same as in french?

@sundogplanets All of the B.Eng “oe” words are weird, like foetid

@sundogplanets

I did not know we had a Canadian spelling for maneuver.

You can let that one slide but don’t you dare drop the ‘u’ after ‘o’.
