“It’s absurd for ODOT to claim that their proposed $1.9 billion 10-lane highway is in compliance with the city’s existing plans for #climateAction, sustainable #transportation investment or neighborhood development. We filed this lawsuit because state law requires ODOT to follow the city’s #cleanAir and climate goals. ODOT shouldn’t be allowed to advance a project that brazenly violates the city’s adopted plans.” -- #NoMoreFreeways #ODOTGTFOpdx #Portland

Good recommendation for very basic, linux-friendly video editing software? (Prefer open-source/free, but willing to pay if it's actually what I need)

whitemice,
@whitemice@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets Needs dependent of course, but I have previously used Open Shot to trim and splice a long video. It was relatively easy.

Exploring Reddit’s third-party app environment 7 months after the APIcalypse

Apollo dev: "I don’t believe Reddit’s leadership... cares about developers anymore."

@arstechnica After ~30 years in IT, and mostly using Open Source software . . . can we ever stop expecting corporations to "care" about things? They don't, they didn't, and never will.
If you are developing something on a proprietary stack you are going to get screwed, it is inevitable.

If retaining a particular CEO at a company is make-or-break then that CEO was/is bad at their job. A Chief Executive should build a sustainable institution that can operate in their absence.

Email attachments are a silly hack but it's now just considered routine and even reliable. Base64? We're seriously still transforming multi-megabyte binaries to alphanumeric encoding for transmission? multipart/alternative; boundary=[random garbage]? Just an absolute joke of a hack.

whitemice,
@whitemice@mastodon.social avatar

@tomw Terrible hacks which work consistently and are implemented pervasively; I'll take them 1,000x over vs. an elegant silo'd solution which will stop working sometime next year and only works in a few select products/platforms [which likely begin as free or inexpensive].
base64 encoding for the win! 👍

"Manoeuvre" is officially my least favourite word to spell. (The American spelling ain't too bad, the Canadian spelling is atrocious).

Oh wait, it gets worse: "manoeuvrable"

@sundogplanets Does humanity elimate itself before it Arrives? That is the question. Of it wants to wipe out human civilization it probably needs to come soon.
Our inability to solve large scale problems would be legendary, but there probably won't be anyone to retell the legend.

I'm not sure what "Capitalism" is, but it is not what is preventing the most significant steps we could take on : reducing VMT, walkable communities, urbanization, local agriculture, energy efficient housing, .... Capitalism would eagerly do all those things. if The State - with the full throated support of "Progressives" - was not there to obstruct doing those things.

So, like or don't like , but please stop saying it is the reason we can not address

This article overlooks something obvious: the existence of Green Bay (107K), Duluth(87K), and Appleton (75K).
The Michigan UP is just too far away. There is a radius of reasonable travel, thus a radius for the economic uplift created by a city.

breadandcircuses, to climate

It can be argued that electric vehicles are an improvement when replacing ICE vehicles.

But that misses a much bigger point — which is that the very best car is not an electric car. The very best car is no car at all!

Building electric cars requires massive use of fossil fuels, including petrochemicals for the manufacture of plastics. In addition, mining of lithium for batteries as well as trawling for other minerals in the deep ocean is environmentally disastrous, killing biodiversity while polluting our water, soil, and air.

LITHIUM EXTRACTION — https://www.euronews.com/green/2022/02/01/south-america-s-lithium-fields-reveal-the-dark-side-of-our-electric-future

DEEP-SEA MINING — https://climatejustice.social/@breadandcircuses/109814016209990908

The kind of “Green Growth” championed by capitalists and politicians, which features more electric cars, a bit of solar, and a few wind farms — along with continued use of fossil fuels — is not a good answer. It does not solve any of our problems, and in fact only makes them worse.

Say NO to more cars, of any kind. Push instead for active transportation and for improved public transit.

Continued economic growth is unsustainable. Period. The only logical choice for us and for the biosphere is de-growth.

whitemice,
@whitemice@mastodon.social avatar

@breadandcircuses @IndyRichard I believe people really underestimate the pushback elected get from normals at any kind of change. Change means being yelled at by uninformed and irrational people - that's American democracy. And those people vote, they take their outrage online, they talk to their neighbors - anyone who will listen.
People who support change? They don't show up.
Dismissing this is a mistake.
