Personal opinion, one must be pretty gullible to believe in the myths and legends (while ignoring their contradictions) to believe in the christ mythos.
This made them a ripe target for Republican, racists, Nazis, and Russians. Especially when supported by religious leaders who turned a profit for their support.

I don't know the whole story, but I think a few parts: Putin, not himself a Christian, has leaned heavily on culture-war anti-lgbtq ideas & presented himself as a counterweight to a "decadent" "liberal" West, making him attractive to post-liberal Christian ideologues like Rod Dreher. When Trump oddly praised Putin, conservative US Christians abandoned the previous anti-Putin US policy consensus & decided anti-Putin was partisan Democrat. So many (knowingly/not) repeat Putin propaganda.
