I'm always amazed at how many hardcore tech people 'don't have time for self-hosting', preferring to entrust their precious data to corporate providers. It sorta blows me away, as for someone tech savvy, it's such a trivial amount of time/energy (based on my own experience).

Having control over my own data means a lot to me and I'm surprised others aren't motivated by that. Their trust of corporations is... ill advised.

I wrote a short story about this a few years ago, called 'Thoughtbill':

@lightweight The time and energy bit is not trivial though.

@jamwil I dunno. I think a lot of people make it out to be far more than it is.

@lightweight I’ve got a fair bit of stuff in my Google account. (About 200 GB worth of photos and docs)

The inertia is real!

I did actually play around with nextcloud recently but couldn’t for the life of me get it to even import my photos from Google drive.

Plus, the cost would be quite high compared to Google, once you factor in the cost for backups.

So unfortunately I have for now abandoned it again 😔

@michael huh, I'm amazed that you're finding it expensive... with Hetzner.com, I can get 800GB of disk for a VPS for €35/mo...

@lightweight expensive is of course relative, but this is the calculation I made:

With Google, I'm paying £25 (lets round that to €30) per year for 200GB.

With NextCloud I'd have to pay for a server (€7.19 per month) plus a 200GB volume (€10.56 per month) so a total of just over €200 per year, before I even think about backups.

Is €200 per year expensive? I'm grateful that it's not a life-changing amount for me, but it’s enough that I need to think about it. And either way it's 6+ times Google's cost.

But, to be fair, the main issue for me wasn't even the cost, but rather that I was unable to import my existing data.

@michael huh. A quick search just showed me this: https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/integration_google and this https://leavemealone.com/blog/moving-from-google-photos-to-nextcloud/ It might also be worth looking at PhotoPrism as a companion to NC... https://www.photoprism.app/

@lightweight thanks for that!

Unfortunately I couldn’t get the Google Photos app to run at all: it just wouldn’t proceed beyond a few thousand photos.

I definitely intend to try again when I have some time though.
