If you work at a company which has fully-remote employees, just how "full" is the "fully remote”?

I.e., are folks still required to show up in person for interviews and/or periodic onsite/offsite gatherings? [poll]

@bitprophet we have an annual all hands retreat and an annual functional team retreat and then subsidised additional retreats as needed / desired but all optional since covid and that’s unlikely to change.

addie,

@bitprophet @janetlogan what is this fully remote thing you speak of?! I was deemed essential in 2020 and have never been able to work remote.

@bitprophet I'm in the second group. We have an office that three or four of us are there 0 or more times a week even if they live in town. I have colleagues I have seen once since 2019 in person.

@bitprophet I voted the second option here because it matches my most recent employment experience, but commenting with a caveat: "required" is a tricky term. Even companies that take this approach and do it well can fall victim to "important decision got made over otherwise casual coffee chat in the hallway" super easily. This used to be somewhat indicated by "remote friendly" vs. "remote first", but no one wants to say something like "remote employees get forgotten about" out loud.

@jonafato For sure, second-class citizens are a problem with any group that isn't all in the same physical space. I consider that orthogonal.

I'm mostly just trying to gauge what to expect when I start looking, because a lot of job entries now say "remote", but if that usually means “remote, but you have to get on a plane and then breathe other folks' air for a week every quarter” then I'll be sad.

Obviously, every company's different so this isn't going to really do me a lot of good 😂

@bitprophet I'm funemployed but at my last gig we met once a year at a week-long retreat

@tintvrtkovic but was that mandatory attendance, or no? (i.e.: poll option 2, or one of poll options 3-4?)

@bitprophet it wasn't mandatory, just encouraged

@tintvrtkovic sounds like option 2 then! ✨

(unless it's the "encouraged" that means “this jerk has literally never shown up in person and it's been 2 years, time to fire them”, which is obviously harder to track but is definitely a thing)

@bitprophet yep, I voted number two, just wanted to provide a little more context. No one ever got in trouble for missing these, except for missing out on some hanging out/bonding time
