With PSF board election info and dates posted (https://pyfound.blogspot.com/2024/05/psf-board-election-dates-for-2024.html), re-reminder of what I said in my thread here: https://mastodon.social/@jonafato/112259427221353602. Remember that you need to be registered at a voting-eligible class of membership and elect to exercise your voting rights before the nominees are announced. Better to register early than to forget until it's too late.

Conference Chats (https://www.conferencechats.org) Wednesday call starts in 2.5 hours. We've had excellent discussions and welcomed some new people to the group in recent months, which is a trend that I'm excited to see continue. Discord link on the website for those that would like to join. No conference organizing experience necessary, just an interest in building community spaces and events.

Questions like "does anyone know what this video connector is?" will completely derail me and consume my attention until a series of adapters is assembled. Every time.

What's a movie or tv show you think more people should see?

Are there any anti-"people search" / personal data removal services that are open source and / or operate as a non-profit (i.e. are less incentivized to act against their customers' best interests)?

Oof, it is apparently new laptop season for me. Are you happily running a linux distro on a laptop that is reasonably light and would you tell me about it?

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

@webology @baconandcoconut Yep, I have a framework 13, as do a few of my family members. Overall very happy with them. In the worst case scenario of a warranty issue that required replacing the main board, the resolution was "we'll ship you a new board, you ship us the old one back". As long as that (i.e. not having a walk-into-an-apple-store style support experience) is not a deal breaker, it's the best option around IMHO.

Target didn't exactly have the widest selection of physical media to begin with, but this is still not a great development https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/19/24135140/target-dvds-physical-media-selling-stop

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

@mpirnat Media quality is a big factor. The other is access, i.e. who knows when my favorite movie or TV show may just disappear from a streaming service and never show up again. I'm hoping (but not holding my breath) that this means there will be some room to thrive for smaller specialty retailers.

It's probably about time I wrote a review of my framework laptop. TL;DR preview: love the concept, quality hardware, but it currently feels like a tough sell for anyone that might need to use their warranty and is not comfortable swapping laptop parts on their own.

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

Their target market is obviously folks who are likely to tinker and swap parts, but there's a lot of value in e.g. being able to go into an Apple store and get your hardware issues fixed without needing to DIY. It'd be super cool to see some sort of "find a local indie repair shop that will swap your board for you" directory on the website.

My new SofaBaton X1S remote isn't perfect, but it has some cool features and is significantly better than having three different remotes. I never owned a Logitech Harmony, but I'm told this is one of the closest alternatives that's being made today.

A couple reminders given that PSF board elections are coming up:

  1. Your work in Python communities and ecosystems may already qualify you for a PSF membership class with voting privileges. You only need to contribute five hours per month to self-certify as a managing or contributing member, and I believe that there are many more people eligible for this than currently enrolled. https://www.python.org/psf/membership-faq/#what-membership-classes-are-there

Reiterating an offhand comment I made on a call last week: it's a whole lot easier for tech employees of many companies to regularly spend money on happy hour at a bar than it is to spend money on open source projects their employers rely on. This is a problem.

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

Would simply reallocating happy hour budgets toward open source funding fix all the open source funding issues? Of course not. But there are significant amounts of process around discretionary spending that exist to make spending easy where it should be. Paying for some open source work should be part of that.

Hey people. Need recommendations on an adjustable manual grinder. Bonus if it is packable to throw in my bag for travel.

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

@greg I bought this Porlex grinder years ago to go with my Aeropress: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002JZCF2/. It even fits inside the Aeropress plunger for more compact travel.

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

@greg Yes, it has the same kind of stepped adjustment as shown in this video https://youtu.be/QLEBfom0mhM?t=615. I wouldn't use it for espresso (steps are not granular or consistent enough), but definitely usable for an aeropress.

TIL the development on a video editor called Olive (https://olivevideoeditor.org/about), which looks really promising, is kind of stalled without some serious influx of funding. Hoping someone throws a bunch of money at the devs a la Blender to get a more modern video editing experience available for free and on Linux.

The trend of companies altering the deal after a product is purchased is simultaneously infuriating and banal. Bought a sonos? Create a sonos account and fork over your personal data or it's a brick now. Bought a roku tv? Accept their new ToS or it's a brick now. It's coming to everything you own, and "vote with your wallet" doesn't work.
