While it’s true that Trump may never see the inside of a prison cell, can we just for once be relieved that a judge threatened actual imprisonment? Everyone keeps complaining that no judge goes there, but when one finally does, I see nothing but neg comments in replies.

There are reasons Trump isn’t in prison now, some unreasonable, some understandable.

Judges don’t want to be reversed on appeal. Trump’s a pres candidate. That’s life, folks.

You’re allowed to appreciate incremental progress

kenryan,

@GottaLaff
Agree, I would far rather he be given loose rein now & end up with an appeal-proof conviction!

salgernon,

@GottaLaff At the risk of asking a stupid question: could the judge sentence him to community service? Or having to stand in front of the courthouse with a sandwich board?

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@salgernon LOL! Yes, I believe a judge can do whatever he/she wants, within reason. But if you’re being serious, they wouldn’t do that for fear of being overturned on appeal.

Virginicus,

@GottaLaff I wish those were the only reasons. Alas, the loyalty of the prison staff is suspect.

LaNaehForaday,

@GottaLaff

People thinking they are going to let a career criminal go without jailing him are being ignorant.

Trump has made it impossible for them to allow him to be free by exhibiting behavior's that make him a threat to the USA.

They cant let him go. He is dangerous. They will find a way to put him into captivity. And by the time all the facts come out, the GOP will turn on him or also look like traitors.

Trump has made himself a toxic danger to society around the world, not just here in the USA

@LaNaehForaday Thank you

@GottaLaff

Agreed. It is a step in the correct direction.

@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@DrGeof Many thanks

robert42,

@GottaLaff Which case and judge was this / do you have an article link? Just curious to learn more.

richxxiii,

@GottaLaff I do get a tiny bit of solace in the fact that this is probably the only time in his life (well, except for some of his foundational years as a child - likely why he's a psychopath) that he's had to experience distress. You can see it in his recent speeches. He's coming apart at the seams.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@richxxiii YES. Big fat YES.

tiamat271,
@tiamat271@mastodon.online avatar

@GottaLaff I for one appreciate any development, however small, that twists tfg’s insides into knots of fear and humiliation.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@tiamat271 Me too, Jenny and thank you

btrinen,
@btrinen@social.seattle.wa.us avatar

@GottaLaff What is the range of options a judge has to enforce a gag order like this before sending someone to jail?

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@btrinen fines, some kind of consequences for lawyers and Trump with rulings, not sure of all of them, sorry.

LeaBug,

@GottaLaff give huge fines for each violation of the courts order. He'll have to shut up eventually. 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@LeaBug I’d love that.

    @PattyHanson That would be great.

    todwest,

    @GottaLaff I don't know what kind of latitude this judge has, but fining Trump, say, $1 million for each day the post was up would probably get his attention.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @todwest Me likey

    todwest,

    @GottaLaff There are certainly pecuniary ways to force him into compliance. Judge should, and hopefully will, drop the hammer if it happens again.

    JaneDoeTheFirst,

    @GottaLaff

    Agreed that at least the judge said the word 'prison'. However, talk is cheap. Like the talk that no one is above the law, that Trump is like any other defendant. No, he isn't, as you just pointed out. Why do they keep saying it when the evidence shows otherwise? None of us are willing to take any of this on faith given the long history of failures to bring him to justice or even rein him in.

    In this case, skepticism is the rational response.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @JaneDoeTheFirst If a judge throws him in prison, it could really mess up the case against him. Prison isn’t always the answer for him. I wish it were, but we have a legal system to contend with. And an election.

    It’s way more complicated than other cases. As frustrating as that is.

    JaneDoeTheFirst,

    @GottaLaff

    Then the judge shouldn't threaten prison.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @JaneDoeTheFirst Of course he should. That’s how it works. They issue warnings first, then act.

    JaneDoeTheFirst,

    @GottaLaff

    But you just said that it's too complicated to imprison him.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @JaneDoeTheFirst I didnt’ say “too” complicated, I said complicated.

    The way this works is that judges have to be… judicious. If he jumps right in with imprisonment, well, the case goes away via reversal.

    It’s incremental.

    @tiamat271@mastodon.online avatar

    @JaneDoeTheFirst @GottaLaff She said it’s more complicated, not too complicated.

    The way I see it, the problem with that is that TFG knows it all too well.
    He will ignore the order, by going just over the line. Just enough for his opponents to say lock him up! and for his followers to say he did nothing wrong.
    Free campaign publicity for him right there.

    SonofaGeorge,

    @GottaLaff @JaneDoeTheFirst
    He can run for president from a prison cell. Eugene Debbs did.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @SonofaGeorge Yes, I’ve covered that, in fact. Others have run for other office from prison, too. @JaneDoeTheFirst

    KFClinton,

    @GottaLaff

    Agree. It is logical, reasonable and prevents potential disaster.

    The threat is everything.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @KFClinton Thank you
