@BlackAzizAnansi 4: Provinz Posen, Kingdom of Prussia. 1 each: Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria in Austria-Hungary; Congress Poland in Russian Empire, Kyiv in Russian Empire, Vilnius in Russian Empire. They all spoke Polish and passed away in the Republic of Poland.
@BlackAzizAnansi all southern Ontario with the possible exception of my adopted grandpa, parents unknown. Mennonite side followed the black walnut from Pennsylvania seven generations ago, Scottish side was six, I think. Displacing Indigenous peoples, presumably…
@BlackAzizAnansi as the child of a first cousin marriage I had fewer than eight great grandparents, but all except two came from England. The other two were from Korolowka in Ukraine.
@BlackAzizAnansi oh my gosh, I don’t even know who 2 of my grandparents are, never mind my great grands! And of those I do know about, I don’t know anything beyond that generation. 2 world wars + 3 clashing empires in Eastern Europe made multiple generations of orphans who were too young to remember their people.
@BlackAzizAnansi
the only one I've ever even heard of was my dad's grandfather, and he was from Nack, a little village in Northern Palatinate, not far from the little village I grew up in.
All the others vanished in the dusts of time.
Great question, marvellous thread BTW 🫶🙏
@BlackAzizAnansi all my maternal great grandparents are from Ukraine. My paternal grandparents are from...hard to say exactly. One from Ireland and a couple from New Brunswick I think, and a paternal great grandmother from somewhere in the Athabasca district of the Northwest Territories (not 100% sure if it was in the part that ended up in Alberta but probably). Her mother was thought to be Indigenous but record keeping by colonial governments of the day was not very robust concerning First Nations people.
@BlackAzizAnansi maternal paternal great grandparents from Reggio Calabria (Italy); maternal maternal from Introdacqua, Abruzzo (Italy); paternal maternal from somewhere in the Russian Empire; not sure about paternal paternal.
