Interesting note for Fediverse/Mastodon users: you do not get a "view" count here, which makes some new folks (ie journalists/others) feel like they aren't being seen, even though their message is being read by lots of people. They only see the boosts and stars... So hit the "star" button often, especially on new people finally migrating here! #Feditips
And boost other people's content and respond to other people's posts.
I wasn't on Xitter, and I find it incredibly self-indulgent for certain people to post their paintings/photos/crafts/digital art/book promos/music and never say so much as a hello to the people of this community or take an interest in other accounts. If you're too good for the rest of us, that's an autoblock unless you're a bot (we have cool bots here), a news service, or a luminary member of society.
I’m a little stingy with boosts because because I don’t want followers to hide boosts from me like I’ve hidden them for a lot of folks I follow. (Because it can be just too much). Also I tend to assume a lot of folks that follow me have a lot of overlaps in our social graphs.
So I like a lot - almost as a thanks for sharing that. But only boost if it’s something I would have shared in the first place
@exador23@ai6yr@Hawkmoon what I boost becomes part of what people see when they click on my profile. I don’t want this to be a repost account (except for possums, they’re different). So I tend to fave a lot of posts too.
@ai6yr I do that too. I star often, I remember when I first joined and there were lots of posts about how stars are meaningless (as no algo), and boost were all that mattered. But for me a post getting a star indicates that someone saw it and thought about it, it would be nice if they boosted but that's the extra bit, the bit that says 'I agree' or 'wow everyone look at this'.
@ai6yr I noticed that on Twitter the likes outnumbered the retweets, but on Mastodon the boosts outnumber the stars. Almost nobody seems to star something here
@ai6yr I read a lot of posts but only star things that interest me because I also use them as bookmarks. Yes I know there's a bookmark feature but I never use it. If the bookmarking feature auto-added stuff to some sort of editable list I would use it.
So an example from an alert I copied over from the birdsite, you can see the original replies, likes, and views. You can see here on Mastodon you get only replies and "likes"/stars, and boosts, no idea of how many views (real or false). So, you could have lots of people reading what you are posting and you aren't getting that "endorphin rush" when a lot of people see what you've posted. Good for reducing social media addiction, but not great for letting people know how far their message is getting out.
@ai6yr@mem_somerville My bookmarks are so disorganized, it’s hard to find what I am looking for! So I’ve recently started replying to posts using my own custom hashtags…easier to search for specific topics I want to find again!
