@gregorni I think the value of the statement is not the mathematical fact, but the realization that people can be, often times accidentally, stupid. E. g. almost every public door nowadays has push/pull labels and still a lot of people, including me, just try one instead of reading.

@FineFindus But I believe if you're making fun of people you call stupid, you should make sure your phrasing is correct, no matter what exactly the full meaning is.

@gregorni do you think intelligence doesn’t follow a typical bell-curve histogram? Because if it does, the quote works whether you use “average” to be “mean”, “median”, or “mode”.

The real trick is that way more than half of everyone thinks they are smarter than average.

@IslandUsurper I mean, the statement could be true with a bell-curve graph like you're describing, it's just very unlikely that that's really how the graph would look in real life. It would be safer to just use "median", as you said.
