USB (OLD): You have various cables. Some of them have a blue color inside the plug. The ones that are blue inside the plug work better.

USB (C): You have various cables. Plug one in for a fun surprise!

@mcc usb-a: requires three attempts to find correct orientation. usb-c: also requires reorienting or reversing the cable. https://social.v.st/@th/106805260414063003

@mcc any of the USB C cables I have charge my Samsung A50, including the power supply for my HP laptop. My only problem is my tablet is USB Mini A so I have to go find that cable. It's not enough of a reason to upgrade the tablet, but my next tablet will be USB C.

TMakarios,

@mcc
They told me USB C was reversible. They didn't promise it would work if I reversed it.

I have a USB C-to-C cable I sometimes use for charging my phone. I can only be sure it'll charge faster than my phone uses the power it gets if I have a particular end of the cable plugged into the charger, and the phone end is a particular way around.

@mcc The standard shouldn't have been released without a sane (and mandatory) labeling system.

At the moment it's up to the user to tie tags to them after mucking about with the expensive USB-c tester they never should've needed to buy.

webhat,

@mcc my experience with USB C cables is:

  • most of them don't work with my phone
  • a few expensive ones, which doesn't include the Apple cables, will charge my phone, can be easily become dislodged—50%of the time just touching the phone is enough—and break contact
  • 2 cables click in and charging works 100% of the time and the cable needs slight pressure to release

I have a ruggedized Ulefone, one of the cables came with my phone and the other came with a high-end STB

ReneRebe,

@mcc so true, I especially hat how so many USB-C cables, even brand new phones, are only USB-2.0 :-/

michellelaverickmusic,

@mcc usb old. You don’t fit. You don’t fit. Go get yourself yet another dongle… or rebuy all you old devices and wonder if there with be a usb-d standard. Wonder “universal” really meant there being as many standards as there are stars in the firmament 😂

sickmatter,

@mcc you were the chosen one! It was said you would destroy profits, not increase them! You were to bring balance to the ports, not leave us in darkness!

jellycrystals,

@mcc OMG.... The blue bit means better??

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@jellycrystals It means USB 3.0

@mcc The exception that keeps biting me is that USB (OLD) that is type B, if it's blue inside it can't plug in to a socket that isn't blue inside. They are physically incompatible.

horqua,
@horqua@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc Waddaya mean theres different kinds of USB-C connectors?

geekwonk,

@horqua @mcc more that the same connector can carry a range of electrical and data capabilities. so you pull the cable from the drawer and don’t know how fast it will charge or transfer data until you try it out.

jernej__s,

@geekwonk @horqua @mcc …or if it'll work at all for chosen application.

@mcc my keyboard came with a purple usb A to C cable, so I give it USB 3 as a treat sometimes.

i have learned that the trick is to Simply not own any devices

@gutmunchies No devices only cables

hisham_hm,
@hisham_hm@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc @gutmunchies until the day you get a cable that's analog P2 in one end and USB in the other, meaning that the cable is secretly a device

zandra,
@zandra@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc ...blue... blue inside the plug is old? :(

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@zandra USB C does not have colors inside the plug. Unless they are made by Lenovo, in which case they carry a mighty doom

xgranade,
@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

@mcc @zandra Weirdly, Razer USB-C plugs are green. I guess for when you want your surprise cable to be Mt Dew flavored?

BenjaminNelan,
@BenjaminNelan@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc @zandra I have some USB C cables with orange in them that I thought was for '100W' but turned out it was just a stylistic thing... 😩

christinelove,
@christinelove@mastodon.social avatar

@zandra @mcc No, blue means USB 3 over the old connector, it's good
