Remain convinced that if we had a good non-GIMP Photoshop alternative on Linux, more people would move over. It’s those one or two big apps that are showstoppers.

@ernie If Affinity moved over, I might consider Linux full-time.

@snazzyq Affinity works more or less perfectly in WINE, so we're closer than you think

    @manualdousuario Affinity works via Wine a lot better than Adobe does, so there may be hope.

    @manualdousuario It would be ideal, sure, but good stability goes a long way. (I will note I had to compile Wine specifically for Affinity.)

    @ernie 100%. For me, it’s the Adobe suite and SpamSieve.

    @ernie I think Krita fits much of that niche even if it's only typically recommended as a drawing tool rather than image editing

    Adam,
    @Adam@social.lein.us avatar

    @ernie Yeah, GIMP & Krita are still missing a lot compared to today's Photoshop. There's still nothing close to AfterEffects on Linux either. Even Outlook x86 is still far better than Evolution or Thunderbird for PIM.

    @ernie creative software: audio, video, bitmap, and vector. All passably good but not great on Linux

    ernie,
    @ernie@writing.exchange avatar

    @geerlingguy Yeah, I think things are slightly better on the video and motion graphics end, but print design—the field I spent the first half of my career working in—particularly feels like an afterthought sadly

    @ernie People just need to spread the word about Emacs Image Manipulation Mode. https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/EmacsImageManipulation

    @ernie Krista is already there. the big holdout is not software, but driver support

    ernie,
    @ernie@writing.exchange avatar

    @plsburydoughboy like Krita but I asked about a feature and a dev was like “this doesn't fit in our scope.”

    You're right, it's close, but it seems insistent on not being a general purpose app sadly

    @plsburydoughboy@mastodon.social avatar

    @ernie there's a few others out there, but I think, more important than what software is available, is that driver support still isn't there yet that artists would be willing to use Linux as a daily driver OS

    I strongly hold the opinion that WiNE can make up for the difference to make Windows programs just run in Linux, like Steam could make it seamless on SteamOS, but that work won't be possible without seamless driver support
