@exchgr Every time an app does a "Rate me" pop up, I give it the lowest rating and then say in the review that the low rating is because of the pop-up. :)

So this year marks the 25th anniversary of my first email server going online, and I have been running it continuously ever since (seriously I still have "Happy new year the world didn't implode" emails from 2000 in my email folders)

Nonetheless I still get this mildly dreadful feeling I have been doing it wrong this whole time. As such I have decided to go to https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mwlucas/run-your-own-mail-server and make a modest pledge in exchange for Sage Advice and instruction from @mwl on running your own email server in the form of a DRM free e-book.

I have always been bemused by the irrational fear many Very Smart People have regarding self hosted email. By no means is it easy to set up but maintaining it isn't THAT hard. I have also hosted a Mastodon/Hometown instance for 7 years and I out more work into that, and that same crowd hasn't developed a phobia towards elephants. The propaganda against self hosted email is very strong!

I encourage all efforts to wrest control of email back from Google and Microsoft!

Adam,
@Adam@social.lein.us avatar

@msh @mwl Nice! I've self-hosted Exchange server for many years and started self-hosting a much cheaper Postfix/Dovecot server last year (which is a completely different animal!) There are so many different ways to make your own mail server! Still learning lots and probably doing something wrong, but here are my notes in the context of the cheap one I made for DeltaChat use: https://bookofadamz.com/how-to-make-your-own-whatsapp-signal-telegram-competitor/

Hey everyone! I recently posted about my latest project, a universal fediverse sharing button: https://stefanbohacek.com/project/fediverse-sharing-button/

Is this something that you'd find useful for your website or blog?

EDIT: Thanks everyone for sharing and trying this out! I fixed an issue on iOS some of you might have run into, just FYI.

Adam,
@Adam@social.lein.us avatar

@stefan Cool! I think usability could be better. There's a field for the ActivityPub server, but I don't think people will know what to type in there. I'd probably rather a "Share to Fediverse" one-click button that THEN loads a page or overlay with clear instructions: "Type your Fediverse domain URL here then press Share to publish the following post on your server." Having just a server field is less likely to be understood.

Adam,
@Adam@social.lein.us avatar

@stefan Ah, another issue is that on mine, the placeholder doesn't appear (and neither does my typed text as it's white on white). I see in your code that there is a placeholder, so if that was visible it would probably be more obvious. Also, your aria-label attribute is set to "Amount (to the nearest dollar)" for that field. Minor minor bugs.

Adam,
@Adam@social.lein.us avatar

@stefan Yeah, that wording sounds a lot better. Plus the darkmode fix probably will make it much more obvious. Nice!

Retrospective from a month with the 11 Ultra:

I'm now officially a fan of the Zenfone. It hits a certain sweet spot for me between the headphone jack, UI, camera, and battery life. It's the direction should have gone.

I don't like the larger size more than the size of the 9/10, but it is roughly the same size of my previous Samsung Galaxy Plus, so I can definitely live with it.

@SomeGadgetGuy @vwbusguy If only that Unihertz Jelly Star had a removable battery. :) Love that little thing.

Has anyone tried to make an Android app that:

  • Shows in the Share tray for files, photos, videos
  • Turns on Wifi hotspot
  • Starts a webserver
  • Shows a QR code to connect to the Wifi hotspot
  • Serves selected files to any device that connects to said hotspot via http
    ?

Are podcasts still RSS feeds with MP3 attachments or have they become commercialized proprietary crap? Or both? (I don't listen to podcasts.)

Xiaomi releases a smaller premium phone that EMBARRASSES similar offerings from Samsung and Apple. Here's a first look at the Xiaomi 14!

The main camera on this thing is pacing (and often outperforming) the main cameras on iPhones and Galaxy Ultras... 🤯

If you're tired of poor recommendations from the YouTube algorithm (or you keep your watch history turned off) why not make YOUR OWN YouTube? https://somegadgetguy.com/b/3yS
It's really easy to follow your favorite channels, and get MUCH faster notifications when they put out new videos 👍

    My tabs were getting out of control, like on my phone where the number is now an infinity loop.

    So I've actually gone & setup workspaces in @Vivaldi to try to make things easier to manage and stop me losing tabs.

    @markwalker @Vivaldi You can also use "bookmarks" or "favorites" which web browsers have had for 30 years. :) Folders of bookmarks can be opened as tabs with 2 clicks pretty nicely too these days.

    Learned today about this local “non-profit dedicated to supporting bicycling, pedestrians, and public transportation”. It offers repair classes, education and works to better the biking experience in the area.

    Would love to set up a similar “PC co-op” to teach people how to repair and use their computers, choose lower-powered PCs that still meet their needs, recycle old parts to use in PCs for donations / reduce e-waste & build a local computing community. 🤔
