Did South American countries recall ambassadors and cut their ties with Russia when the Russian army destroyed the city of Mariupol, killing and displacing tens of thousands of people? I can't remember that happening https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/31/bolivia-israel-hamas-gaza-war-crime

Replies to this post show how the recent attack on Israel has swathed a disgusting Antisemitism wave all over the world. Hamas has achieved that people who are deeply ignorant of the conflict become deeply antisemitic in a heartbeat. All with the help of the supposedly "liberal" values that these people have. Just imagine Hamas an extreme anti liberal terrorist group helped by supposedly "Liberal" people all over the world. Never again!

Nor have too many countries or groups (not on the left nor the right) said that any other country did not have the right to exist after it was accused of war crimes. [I cannot find the clip elsewhere, but you can find Tomer Persico, of Sholom Hartman Institute's insight on this on the other, more toxic site, ❌.]

w_gulley,

@anneapplebaum South American countries still imagine Russia to be their post colonialist friend. Just wait. Empire is calling . . . Russia, Russia, you could be great. Again. MRGA.

Iran has partners in many South Americans countries. It's not surprising.

@anneapplebaum The lengths to which you will go to attempt to deflect criticism from Israel's fascism, apartheid, and genocide really have no limits. Shame on you. History will not look kindly on you.

taijiquan,

@anneapplebaum This is pretty easy to grasp. Just read a little about the 60’s and you’ll understand why in many South American countries anything and anyone associated with the US is seen as “bad”.

rebel63,

@anneapplebaum
the Ukraine is receiving alot of worldwide support for their anti Russian effort
For the Palestinians, most countries cannot physically support them, except via diplomatic means
They can't supply arms & materials to Palestine
they can't send advisor's
any UN vote is thwarted by USA, UK, EU, etc
leaves little in the way of actions open
Dont be aggrieved, Ukraine has more actual support than the Palestinians will ever have
EDIT: see you write for the Atlantic. Now I get it.

kavo3,

@anneapplebaum Oh yeah, bunch of south american hypocrates with tendentious political view of events! da Silva for love of god, in Mariupol died approx. 80 000 civilians many of them children? What did you do? Norhing. So please, for love of god, shut up!

JFC @anneapplebaum do you know anything about the demographics of Bolivia, Colombia and Chile?

shit, if Puerto Rico were independent we would be doing the same. what's even worse? it's consequence of similar gringo proxy wars.

too many of y'all gringo public intellectuals are incredibly ignorant of your country's very immediate, 3hrs away by plane dirty dealings.

brush up up on your Latin American studies. you cannot know USA history without it.

@anneapplebaum before leaving Israel book-keepers and accountants checked the economic dependency of their country of Russia resp. Israel and then and only then they took their decision of leaving.

@anneapplebaum Because a war between two standing armies is the same as a war between a standing army and two million civilians trapped by that same army. I get it.

kbensimon,

@anneapplebaum it’s another example of the double standards, rooted in antisemitism, Israel is dealing with.

@anneapplebaum to be fair it’s only the ideologically compromised, ancient dogma adhering, South American countries doing so.

@anneapplebaum Many are pro-Russia. Very disturbing. The disinformation wars succeeded. Always whining about persecution works well, look how the GQP co-opted it. They learned it well from their Russian donors.

My take is, we are inconsistent tribalism, still struggling with the concept of universal application of rights.

S. America (some) is reacting more strongly to Israel/Gaza, whilst my country of Canada abstain on UN humanitarian votes there, yet Ukraine, little division in our support there.

We are still to tribalism.

MarcCLA,

@anneapplebaum Russia plays both sides politically. They are the champions of the far left and the far right. Thats why Putin said he didnt care who won in Brazil bc he had great relations with both. Great relations mean they will both be ok with him killing people. Bolivias far left government cant criticize Russia bc they are an extension of Russia, exactly like far right governments that will do the same. Right and left have no meaning, its all theatre for Putin.

To be fair, you'd probably have a hard time finding a country that applies the very same set of standards uniformly to all other countries in the world.
