If you have covid, wearing a mask at home and not sharing the same bedroom (if possible) with your household members greatly reduces the chance of you infecting them.

New study out!

@chrischirp worked for my wife and I in August.

Turns out our couch is also super comfortable!

Wearing a mask and having more than one bathroom also helps.

@chrischirp @auscovid19 Worth reading since at the rate things are going, we all will be infected at some point, and this article discusses how you can reduce the possibility of infecting others in your household.

On the other hand, no big surprises; mostly the study just confirms that mask wearing and isolation work

Probably the biggest unexpected finding would be "children under the age of 12 were significantly more likely to be infected"; I guess you can't really isolate from a child that age 😢

@sabik @pfred60 @chrischirp @auscovid19 it's really hard for children under 6 yo {edit: I mean, it's hard for everyone, especially the youngest children}, but not impossible. When I finally caught covid in May, we followed this basic plan: isolated sleeping quarters, masks, open windows, HEPA filter in the room. Our younger child (8 yo) was the only one who did not ultimately get it (it was their 12 yo sibling who had a nightmare one night, and climbed into bed with their mom at the peak of her infectious period). Having the luxury of having enough space to spread out, and good enough air circulation, are as big factors as age, I think.

@sabik @pfred60 @chrischirp @auscovid19 i had my first COVID infection about two months ago, and my ten year old and I would each wear a mask when in shared areas of the house. He didn't catch it or carry it back to his class.

Worked out pretty well for us, but he's pretty independent.

My wife did catch it though we slept separately as soon as I tested positive, but was likely infected before I had symptoms..
