Four years on from our first wave, here is a brilliant examination by Prof Anthony Costello of the failures of the UK pandemic response in 2020 - emphasising that we did NOT need hindsight to have responded differently.

really important article tackling the myth that ICU capacity was sufficient during the pandemic height in the BMJ

Also highlights the awful mental and physical health impact on frontline staff.

Really good post from Bob Hawkins on where we are with vaccination uptake in England.

TLDR: worrying drop off in booster uptake, especially among younger immunocompromised people where it is very low

Great Covid update from Bob Hawkins.

TLDR: All Covid measures are low and either stable or falling.

Infection survey also has estimate of current chance of hospitalisation on infection by age

This is insane: we made CPAP breathing devices in the 1000s in 2020/21 for the NHS - there are several thousand left over.

Ukraine is desperate for them; a charity has offered to ship them, but the government plan to destroy them instead!! madness.

As it happens these devices were developed at UCL under the leadership of Prof Becky Shipley & in partnership with industry.

They've won several awards and could be saving lives in Ukraine (and elsewhere!) right now.

Don't destroy them!!

England virus update: This week we're seeing an unusual double flu wave in hospital admissions (32% increase in last week), and Covid admissions also increasing slightly (3% up).

Winter surges not over yet, but scale smaller than last winter which is good.

Be careful out there - there is SO MUCH infection around.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt that England is in its biggest Covid wave for well over a year now, with latest ONS infection survey results published.

An estimated 4.3% of people infected in England as of last week (6% in London!)

I've written about it here
