Currently metalhead.club is using the DeepL Free API for post translation, which means we can translate up to 500,000 characters per month.

Usually the "payment" period ends on 7th of each month but most of the time we run out of free characters shortly before the "reset" and the translation service is not available for a few days each month.

We could upgrade to 1,000,000 characters per month, which you'd probably suffice. But that's an additional € 25 on our invoices. What do you think?

@thomas
I mostly use Tusky, and it doesn't even show a server translate option.
It integrates with the locally installed Google translate, though.

@thomas nice to have for me, but I do speak the two most common languages on this instance. I understand that it's a helping feature for many, but you know, deepl is just a click away.

@thomas I'd immediately pay 25 euros for an alt text generator though 😉

@derthomas @thomas There‘s a mastodon app with a KI doing exactly that … I don’t know which it was …

derthomas,
@derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

@trendskater @thomas but does that work? Because the text should be useful too.

manon,
@manon@metalhead.club avatar

@thomas I like to use it for languages other than English (and German, obviously) for convenience.
I wouldn’t bother to copy&paste a conversation in Swedish into a translator, but it’s nice to be able to read it directly on Mastodon.

@thomas Ich brauchs nicht …

Deadmanwalking,

@thomas Das brauchen wir nicht. Selten hast du mal Texte, die mehr als 500 Zeichen haben. Oft kann man auch nicht übersetzen. Da mache ich dann copy und past. Auch schreiben hier viele englisch und die meisten können die Sprache.

@thomas self-hosting LibreTranslate would be another option.

@thomas Nice to have, but non essential and not worth paying money for.

lars,

@thomas nutze ich bei meiner Instanz auch. Sehr nützlich das Feature.

@loehwe@social.tchncs.de avatar

@thomas for me it's no issue, got the "ToDeepl" Firefox extension as fallback

SunDancer,
@SunDancer@metalhead.club avatar

@thomas It's a nice to have. No need to put money in there IMHO

@thomas@metalhead.club avatar

Is lost translation a thing that you rely on or is it just "nice to have"?

Kitty,
@Kitty@metalhead.club avatar

@thomas I use it, but I'm mindful that others need to use it too so I don't translate everything.
I use it if I've no idea what's in the toot, which still happens with my German.
I like the free version then a few days of imagination, it helps me concentrate on my German learning. And I like the tiny touch of random I might reply and my answer might be totally weird, coz that's just in brand for me 🤣

Matijnweren,

@thomas it's nice to have. The app I use most for Mastodon doesn't even have the translate button, but Google translate is just 2 clicks away instead of 1.

inviridi,
@inviridi@metalhead.club avatar

@thomas I never use this feature because I usually think that I understood everything correctly. That is obviously not the case, but I rarley notice 😄

There are many browser plugins if the need arises.
