jerry,

Not a bad day. I managed to get the new Epyc server built and sorted out how to run containers without root, then got mobilizon (https://meetups.infosec.exchange) up and running in a container on the new server. I am 98% complete with moving video.infosec.exchange there - peertube’s config files are dramatically different between a bare metal install (what the current site uses) and a containerized version - it’s been tedious to sort everything out, but I think I’m close.

Next will be moving pixel, elk, matrix, infosec.pub, and infosec.place to it. Matrix will be next as it’s running low on disk space.

@jerry please don't take this as an insult but are you trying to beat musk to building the "everything" app? 😀
Love following the updates

jerry,

For those wondering, I’m radically consolidating and moving all the Infosec and Fedia instances to actual server grade hardware. Everything I’m consolidating should see a substantial performance improvement once I’m done.

It also forced me to face my demon: docker compose. I don’t love docker, but it is fast becoming the preferred deployment method for all the fedi-things, so it was just a matter of time.

petterroea,

@jerry I know many who consider docker their demon, but for me, now that I'm used to it, I can't go back! I hope you also end up thinking it is useful, as it has been for me.

Containerizing eh! Nice upgrade

@jerry I dislike about docker, that less and less development goes into the fundament of an application. I like about docker, that I don't have to brawl with all the exotic frameworks they decided to use.

@jerry Aww Jerry is growing up! Next thing you know he’ll be deploying services using Helm charts to a Kubernetes cluster. Join us Jerry! 😹🤣

jbaggs,

@jerry Thank you for all of the work. I honestly didn't do more than 20 minutes research before landing on this instance, but I'm really glad I did. The amount of care you put into upkeep is phenomenal.

@jerry we () are holding out on arch + installing directly to the VM for now.

any particular gotchas you've noticed w/ docker?

joriki,

@jerry

might be getting a little old, but I thought this was a pretty interesting guide to container tech

preview has wrong headline: "Kubernetes containers: A comprehensive runtime comparison"

@jerry you need to love docker it’s amazing

zoid,

@jerry I love running stuff in docker. Even moved my development to docker. Maybe give portainer a try. Like having everything in one place.

@jerry Cool. Welcome to the world of Podman!

jerry,

@compuguy I went vanilla docker engine for now. Podman looked like a lot.

vertana, (edited )

@jerry @compuguy Podman is mostly compatible, but I’ve hit a lot of snags using it and that seems to be the general consensus among the people I talk to also. I tend to just use Docker everywhere even if their licensing did get a bit screwy.

@jerry Super interested in how mobilizon pans out for you!

jerry,

@Possiblydrew same. It looks somewhat polished.
